I'm not saying they would never trade him.
But what if we're two years into the five-year extension, have somehow fallen off a cliff and Giannis says he wants out? What incentive does the organization have to trade him right then and there? Giannis is going to net a massive return if and when he ever does request a trade, regardless of the number of years he'll have left on a deal. So, I guess I'm just failing to see what incentive the organization would have to pull the trigger on a deal the minute he says he's sick of Milwaukee.
To add on that, what incentive does Giannis have to sign the supermax now, given that he can sign it at the end of the season? A whole season would give him more information on how the core of Khris, Giannis and Jrue could work which I guess is important.
if he doesnt sign he needs to go immediately on the trade block. we invested in jrue... if its not good enough fine but we should never let ANY player hold us hostage. to me it would be absolutely moronic to invest in a clown show season thats more about where giannis goes next then winning a title this year. were offering the richest sports contract in history. theres nothing left to figure out.
I agree. Horst pretty much gambled our entire future on the Jrue deal. If this was done without Giannis's consent to sign the supermax deal this year, it was a massive massive gamble. Let's put it this way, if Giannis plays out the season and the Bucks don't win a championship, they'll likely still be a top 5 regular season finisher, hence a low first round draft pick in 2021. If both Giannis and Jrue leave the team next year in free agency and the Bucks fall off a cliff, then our future draft picks will look something like this:
2021 - 25th to 30th pick
2022 - 1st round pick conveyed to Cleveland
2023 - High lottery pick
2024 - High lottery pick conveyed to NO in exchange for pick in the early 20's (assuming NO gets better with all their assets).
2025 - No picks
2026 - See 2024.
2027 - No picks.
Sure, we could trade Middleton to get a high first round pick back, but nowhere near what we gave up for Jrue. The Bucks will likely keep fighting for that 8th spot every year just so they don't look so incompetent about losing so many high lottery picks. I have zero faith with us landing anyone in free agency either, outside of overpaying for slow centers like Monroe or Lopez.
