It works well when the purpose is “white noise” to balance out the other sounds in the game. Without the crowd noise, you’d just hear squeaking shoes all night which makes the game look dull.

People talk about how they want to hear the players talking but trust me, anyone who plays basketball can tell you it’s not as entertaining as it seems. Those mic’d up highlights on TV are just a few interesting moments compared to a bunch of monotonous calls and screams the rest of the game. Game commentary from players are more entertaining if it’s out in the streets when there’s no refs to call technicals for foul language.

Besides, the loudest players in the league are all “fake tough guys” anyway, right? Who wants to hear guys like Draymond and Patrick Beverly run their mouths all game.

So yes it’s not realistic, but without it the games would have an even more depressing “pandemic era” vibe than it already does now.

I didn't mind the fake noise in that last game. Seemed kinda natural to me. Most have been alright. I'd stick with them

But the Charlotte fan noise was absolutely INSUFFERABLE

It was like having 10,000 bees at a constant drone the whole game

I know you're the Hornets but gat deam

I thought I would hate it, but I think compared to how empty/sad/practicey it would sound with just the sneakers squeaking and coaches barking, I have found I prefer this alternative. Obviously does not get you amped, but it provides just a neutral backdrop where you can watch a game and have it feel like an NBA game as long as you don't think about it too much.

But the little cardboard cutouts need some upgrading. We need some hot girl cutouts for the announcers to inappropriately comment on, some celeb cutouts to point out, and some goofy fashion victim cutouts to laugh at.

I want some sense of normalcy

They've definitely gotten better at what noises to put in at the right time. I was amazed at how in basically real time they put the crowd's disappointed noises up when a shot misses for the home team, and turn up the cheers when it drops. There's a lot more subtleness to the noises now for the games that i have watched. From the comments it sounds like some are doing it better than others.

It doesn’t beat actual crowds, obviously. However, it’s better than no crowd noise imo. I think it’s been well done for the most part

with a little fine tuning or added variety, it's definitely better than no noise at all.

also, are they bringing back the virtual fans, just like in the bubble? or that's a no go since theres no spot to place them in the actual arenas..

I actually really like it without. It just feels "pure" if that makes sense? The fake noise kind of just makes it feel cheap.

I turn the volume down and listen to (classical) music instead of noise & play-by-play.

Since I'm watching these games solo now, I don't mind cheering with the fake crowd.

If NBA offered something that allowed us to turn the crowd noise on/off and have players mic'd up, I'd totally sign up for that. That'd be gold, but I'm sure some words would come out the wrong way and players would be cancelled lol.

Well, not really but at least this way we get some kind of atmosphere.

I think this season each arena is piping the noise in themselves and it can now be heard by teams on the court. In the bubble it was just for TV.

No. I prefer it the way the bubble was

Pistons Wizards game last night, Pistons announcers had no idea when whistles were blown because the background white noise was so high.

I also could not hear whistles or anything other than that noise.

Would prefer the hear everything on the court, ball bouncing, footsteps, to white noise "cheer" at volume 10. Awful experience.

The bubble wasn't bad but some have been pretty over the top. Orlando was pretty bad last night.

Not a question of like, tho I was restricted to choosing it. It has to be there. I don't think a lot of "no" fans realize how dead it would be without even the simulation of crowd noise. It would be like a rec gym. NBA wants to keep you from falling asleep on your couch with soundless games. In the 90s, the Nets even pumped in extra crowd noise over their dead crowds. It's been done before, ain't even the first time. You'd hear this riotous cheer and then look at all the Nets fans sitting on their hands in the stands, it was amusing. But the NBA is trying to make these games as close as they can to actual games and they're 5000 miles away from it as it is. They need the noise.
