Q. ..it has been great to see Hunter's marked improvement from Year 1 to Year 2. What do you see as the biggest change in De’Andre’s game Year 1 to Year 2 and has that made you change what you think his ceiling could be?

Chris Kirchner wrote:The biggest change with Hunter so far is his level of aggression. It’s something not specific but important for him because there were too many games last year when he was invisible on the floor. One stat that demonstrates his aggressiveness is his ability to get to the rim. Thirty percent of his shot attempts came at the rim last year while it’s 35 percent this year. He has limited some of those long 2-point shots he settled for last year and has attacked the rim. This play below is special. He drives, spins and finishes with his off hand.

Ball-handling has also been a significant area of growth for Hunter. He looks more comfortable as a pick-and-roll ball-handler than he did last year.

Defensively, he looks faster on the perimeter, which was his biggest knock in his rookie season and why I thought he was much better suited to play the four rather than the three. His performance against Kyrie Irving in the Brooklyn series showed just how much he improved his lateral movement this offseason.

He just looks like a totally different player than the one I saw last season. His growth has been fun to watch.

Q. Nothing against Cam, but why is he starting? Why isn’t Bogdanovic starting?

Chris Kirchner wrote:Pierce clearly has decided that he needs Reddish’s defense with the starting unit. I thought they would go with Young and Bogdanovic as the starting backcourt before the season began because I figured they would try overpowering teams with their offense, but it’s clear Pierce thinks there’s already enough on the floor, so Reddish’s defense is more valuable with the starting rotation.

Reddish’s offense hasn’t been good and isn’t deserving of a starting spot, but he’s out there because he can guard opposing wings. He’s pressing too much and is a bit out of control on offense. He needs to slow down and pick and choose his spots. He’s playing like he has to make a play whenever he gets the ball instead of making smart decisions. The Hawks should look to work Reddish off the ball more and get him more easy looks cutting to the basket and let him operate that way.

Much like he did during the course of last season, I have confidence he’ll end up figuring it out.

Hunter and Huerter were the smartest players on the floor in this L Vs CHA, and they fight with what they have. So it's on Cam improvement now.

Cam has gone back to that little hopnduring his motion from early last season, he's not shot ready. He needs to call Vince ti get the 'noodle' out of his shot

This is the best starting 5 we can put together right now. Nice mix of vets and youth; shooting, passing and finishing; defense and scoring.

With Huerter, Reddish, Rondo and Gallinari off the bench, this is realistically a top 5 offense with just enough defense to keep us competitive once we get back to fool full strength.

I'm intrigued and excited by what each has to offer:
1. Heurter's shooting and ball handling next to Trae or when Trae sits is important, the biggest question is can he improve his defense enough to keep a hold of his starting 2 Guard spot.
2. Hunter 3nD potential is intriguing, and I also love that he can play PF in some lineups. His biggest question marks would be consistency all around and what else can he add to his offense to make him more versatile.
3. Reddish - the consensus is he has the highest ceiling of the 3. His defensive instincts and want to defend as a rookie was very surprising. The biggest question mark is can he maintain his offensive shooting that was trending up since the calender switched to 2020. I think/hope so. Can he also be that secondary ball handler.

They all have strengths and weaknesses so it'll be interesting to see which one adds to their strengths and limits their weaknesses to propel us into the next phase of the Hawks development.

So far it seems as if Hunter is taking that next step.

Simplis knew Hunter was poised for a breakout year during Day 2 of what was roughly one month of time spent together in Glendale, Calif., this past offseason. There’s a drill Simplis does during which players have to handle the basketball in tight parameters while being guarded by two defenders, and the ball-handler has to make it down the court as the defenders are overtly aggressive and physical. A few of Simplis’ clients, such as Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Brooklyn’s Spencer Dinwiddie and New Orleans’ Nickeil Alexander-Walker, have executed it well, which, they should because they’re on-ball guards. Hunter is 6-foot-8, has a wingspan longer than 7 feet and is more of an off-ball player. With the ease Hunter glided down the court, Simplis knew his client was destined for a bigger opportunity in his second year with the Hawks.

“I was like, ‘OK, guys are going to have a hard time guarding him with his size, athleticism, physical prowess, and now he’s controlling his dribble like that,”‘ Simplis said. “That’s when I knew he was going to make a big splash playing off the pound the way he executed this drill. When we started scrimmaging, it translated.”

..............For Hunter, those opportunities can come when opposing defenses are keyed in on Young. Hunter’s offensive rise benefits himself and Young as there’s now another threat on the floor that the opposition has to prepare for nightly, which is something coach Lloyd Pierce has taken notice of.

“It’s added confidence for him but added confidence in all of us to see that we can play through him,” Pierce said. “He’s deserving of having sets called for him and putting the ball in his hands, whether it’s in the post or in the pick-and-roll. I think guys are going to start looking for him more. He’s shooting the ball with confidence. He’s shooting it with rhythm. He’s proven that he can be a scoring option for us. It’s just good to see guys step up throughout the year, especially when some of our other guys are out.”

The contrast between Hunter and Reddish, the no. 10 pick in the 2019 draft, is telling. Reddish, a 21-year-old who spent only one season at Duke, is a better athlete and more gifted scorer than his fellow second-year wing. But he’s not nearly as strong as Hunter, nor does he consistently make the same good decisions with the ball. Reddish is averaging 11.8 points per game on 35.8 percent shooting this season.

It’s possible that he will end up being better than Hunter when both reach their prime. That just won’t do much for GM Travis Schlenk and head coach Lloyd Pierce if they have already been fired by that point. The Hawks have one of the most interesting collections of young talent in the NBA, but patience is running out.

Hunter didn’t need a long time to develop because he came into the league at 21. He spent three years at Virginia, which has churned out many future pros under Tony Bennett, where he developed both his body and his game. Older prospects like Hunter often get criticized in the predraft process because of a perceived lack of upside. But upside doesn’t do much for a team that needs to win immediately. The Hawks couldn’t afford to wait on a long-term project. They needed Hunter to be good quickly to cover for some of their other young players.

There's been word that ownership is expecting actual progress this season. Thus the spending spree last year on non-All Star talent.

Hunter’s emergence is real and here to stay
No, I didn’t see Hunter becoming the trusted secondary playmaker on the wing that we talked about the Hawks needing all offseason before free agency. No, I didn’t see Hunter being double-teamed (WHAT?!) by anyone this season.
One of the biggest reasons Hunter has improved mightily this season is his ability to score in the midrange. He has made 55 percent of his midrange shots, which ranks him in the 95th percentile, per Cleaning The Glass. He also has made 63 percent of his shots at the rim, which is still league average for forwards, but it’s up from 55 percent last season.

He also has taken a considerable step forward defensively, as opponents are shooting 4.2 percentage points worse at the rim and 2 percentage points worse in the midrange.

Hunter’s growth is arguably the most important development through 25 games for the Hawks, and I wrote about how he has grown, if you haven’t read it already.

A reminder that progress isn’t always linear

Most people, myself included, expected Reddish to have the breakout season Hunter is having, but, of course, it has been the opposite. Reddish is only 21 years old and still learning, so there’s no reason to panic about his trajectory.

“Some of you guys may be surprised,” Pierce said Tuesday. “I’m not. It’s my job to help him grow. It isn’t about shots. It isn’t about makes and misses. It’s about nuances. Can you wait a second longer on a pick-and-roll so you can create some separation? Can you let the screener come to your body as opposed to running to the screener or running to the basketball? Little things that require film watching, that require patience, that require an understanding of how the defense is playing will help him grow and then he can start working on it.

“There’s no panic. He’s struggled the last couple of games shooting the basketball, but there’s so many things that he’s capable of doing.”

With Reddish, it’s more about finding consistency because the talent is there, as evidenced by his performance against the Nets.
