Sadly, it did.

It helps a lot when the opposition's second string center isn't a behemoth who can overpower Wagner. As long as Wagner is matched up with someone not too big, he will give some nice minutes on the 2nd unit. Wagner really knows where to be defensively. He just isn't that great at actually protecting the rim when he is there.

Beal has averaged 45 points with a TS% around 68% and you are complaining?

He makes a good point. How many games have we won with Beal playing an incredible three quarters? He sits and he should sit at the beginning of the fourth quarter and then loses a rhythm. Maybe you keep him in the first three minutes. Sit him for three more. So bring him back the last six minutes of the game.

The reason why his shooting percentage dropped in the 4th quarter this game is because the Wizards started milking the shot clock instead of just running their sets in rhythm. Beal was forced to take a lot more bail out shots against a set defense instead of shots against an off balance defense.

His problem in the other two games were sheer exhaustion. He played 38 minutes in both games, took a ton of shots that required hard work, and he even worked hard on the defensive end.

The issue isn't Beal. Brooks needs to find a way to tread water better while Beal sits so that Beal can sit a little bit longer in the 2nd half.

I don't think he's saying it's Beal. It's on Brooks to figure it out (good luck) though the great ones do finish games when it matters, whether they are tired or not. Brad is a jump shooter and we all know the legs go when you are tired. I think he needs to find a way to get to the basket and draw fouls more late in games and not just rely on his jumper.

It's just one game but Lopez can match up with the behemoths for the most part. We actually might be gaining a little bit of defense and some rim protection with ROLO, but we obviously lose athleticism and a stretch 5.

Mathews being really good just might kill the awful 3 guard lineups. Then Brooks just flips a coin(not joking) for Bonga/Brown.

I know we aren't going to make a trade for a big. Not worth it even trading a future 2nd. Is there anybody out there aside from Mahinmi that we can get who might be able to provide some help?

Also, what are the parameters of the Matthews two-way deal? Can another team steal him away. I assume we can sign him to a regular deal for the rest of the seaosn.

I actually posted the exact same thing earlier in the thread.

Brooks has literally alternated them every game for the last 5 now.

Yeah, and a stretch 5 isn't critical if Neto and Beal (or Brown and Beal) are the guards.

But if Westbrook plays, we need a stretch 5. Ergo, we should only play Westbrook off the bench with the second unit, with Wagner at center.

You gotta be kidding me.

Don't get me wrong. Beal is playing great, but he has been awful in the 4th quarter- that can stand to improve as his conditioning gets into shape. I was also referring to the post where Beal has played the entire 3rd quarter which has left him gassed.

And he has been awful in terms of scoring in the 4th quarter- even most of those points I mentioned have happened in garbage time with the game out of reach. Perhaps that improves as his conditioning improves.

I think it seems like we need a stretch 5 with Westbrook because we have used him in AWFUL lineups with Ish-Neto-Brown-Lopez. You could have a traditional 5 setting ball screens for Russ and still get plenty of spacing with guys like Mathews, Bertans, and Bonga on the court.

Lets not understate how awful Brooks and his lineups have been. You could see the difference tonight when the players played their correct positions.

I’m waiting to judge Westbrook until I see him on the court with Mathews and Bertans

I think Westbrook can still be effective although perhaps he has to play fewer minutes in the short run when he comeback- significantly less than the 37 minutes he has been playing. That being said, I'm not sure if Brooks can navigate that sell to Westbrook although if this good play continues, maybe it will be easier to persuade him.

This Wagner screen is just great. He sneaks in behind Cam Johnson's peripheral view then hop steps at the last moment wiping Cam out giving a clean look for Bertans first 3 of the game. As much as we like Bryant this is what we need from our 5.

Maybe Troy Brown Jr didn't get in because he's being dealt?

Scott Brooks using the Sato strategy on Troy Brown by keeping him on the bench.

Hypothesis: if you play Avdija, Bonga, and Mathews 30 minutes each, the game will be competitive, regardless of the opponent.
