In a hypothetical world where one game decides the DPOY and Ben Simmons actually roasted Gobert (both false), last night was not the night to make the DPOY case for Ben Simmons either.

Draymond Green deserves consideration btw.

But I still think this is firmly Gobert's unless something crazy happens the rest of the way.

Mathisse was the Sixers' best defender last night. Ben wasn't stopping anyone. The Jazz as a whole put up 134 points.

Also Ben Simmons was 3/7 vs. Gobert last night.

Simmons just took a dump on all defensive candidate Rudy and scored 42 points on him. Rudy was guarding Simmons all game.
Simmons is matchup problem for us, he's too fast for someone who can match his size (Gobert), and big for Royce, but in the end I believe we threw Royce at him after he went nuts on Gobert. Simmons went made his first 7, then went 8/17. Jokic dropped 50 on Gobert, it happens, he loses match ups sometimes. Doesn't really matter on most nights, opposing teams are effected heavily by his paint presence.

Lol at people dumping on Gobert for Simmons having a career night. Didn't he only hit like 3 hook shots over him? You know, the unblockable shot?

Royce O'Neale did the majority of the gaurding on Ben, or no one was gaurding him because the transition defense was MIA.

But if we want to play this game: Clarkson just took a dump on DPOY candidate Simmons by scoring 40 points on him. He was gaurding him all game.
(See how ridiculous that sounds?)

Seriously

Read on Twitter

2 layups in transition, and another layup after Gobert had to help on the pick and roll ball handler...Reading this thread you'd think Simmons was abusing him all game lmao

I could see Rudy winning 2 maybe 3 more DPOY’s.
Ingles is cooked.

Right now, it’s should be Gobert in a landslide. 2nd best team defense. Best record in the league. Best defensive RPM in the league. Elite rim protection stats. Underrated perimeter defender who still gets criticized by people for a playoff series from 4 years ago.

And it’s not like the Utah rotation is littered with a bunch of defensive studs, nobody else is likely to get All-D team votes.

Royce O'Neal is the only other one that may get some votes.

Ya I thought about him.

It’s not that he’s surrounded by poor defenders, he just doesn’t have another elite guy like Embiid/Simmons. And the perimeter players funnel everyone towards him, he’s the entire key to their system and it works.

I agree. It also means that because every play is funneled to him that there are time when players score on him. Players are good so when they score over him that is what gets put on SportsCenter. Then the highlight rarely show the 10 other time throughout the game that players turned the corner to just back out and run away to reset.

I don’t think he’s quite DPOY level but robert Covington been a beast lately on the defensive end. 10 blocks last 2 games and one of the steals leaders in the league

Not saying he is the DPOY or anything but Poeltl I think has at least entered the conversation. He isn't getting as many minutes as he should yet but his defense has been pretty staggering. I saw a graphic during the last game that he was the leader in OPPFG% at like 39% with him guarding them or something. I'm sure that's changed by now but just wanted to show some love to an under appreciated big man

Jak has the best defensive tracking stats and the best net defensive on/off in the league. He really needs to play more.
