Chicago & Dallas: Porzingis Possible?

Post#1 » by drosestruts » Sun Feb 21, 2021 4:26 pm

Was wondering how much it would take to get Porzingis from the Mavs? Could the Bulls combine their youth to acquire him? Is that even enough?

Bulls in: Kristap Porzingis, Dwight Powell, Wes Iwundu, and Trey Burke

Mavs in: Otto Porter Jr, Lauri Markanne, Wendell Carter Jr and Coby White

Bulls:

Satoransky/Arcidiacano/Burke
LaVine/Valentine
Temple/Hutchison/Iwundu
Williams/Young
Porzingis/Powell/Gafford/Kornet/Felicio

Bulls consolidate young players into the known asset of Kristaps Prozingis, giving them a big two of LaVine and Porzingis supported by a bevy of good veterans like Sato, Temple, and Young while still including a high upside rookie in Patrick Williams.

Dallas:

White/Brunson/Terry
Richardson/Hardaway
Doncic/Porter Jr./Finney-Smith
Markkanen/Kleber
Carter/Cauley-Stein

Dallas adds a lot of high-potential youth to the roster in one swoop. Coby White is an ideal guard to play alongside a point-forward. He's an off-ball scorer with good size at the guard spot, who is just in over his head when asked to run the show. Markkanen is an athletic 7-footer who can score at all 3 levels. He's never played with a playmaker as talented as Luka (or even close to as talented) and Doncic could be huge for elevating his game. Carter is a jack-of-all-trades master of none type big man. And Otto Porter if healthy would be a great 2-way wing player for the Mavs.

So is the Bulls youth enough for Porzingis? If there's a gap what closes it? A protected pick? Unprotected pick? Patrick Williams? Is it fair as is?

Honestly, whilst value isn't an issue I just can't see a reasonable deal involving Porzingis which doesn't limit the ceiling for Dallas.

It's the problem with all KP deals, finding value in a vacuum is easy. But ultimately the majority of deals lower the ceiling.

Dallas needs to ride with KP and Luka, use Johnson expiring and some of the younger assets to bring in another useful player, operate over the cap, bring back the same crew and add an MLE guy and hope KP stays healthy.

That's too much for Porzingis.

Dallas looks like Chicago with a Doncic/Lavine swap + an even better bench after this trade. Which is good.

Porzingis will have to play with LaVine + an even worse supporting cast than what he has in Dallas. That's bad.

Incoming Players

Kristaps Porzingis
25 year old, 7-3, 240 lb FC from Coosur Real Betis (Spain)
20.5 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 1.3 apg in 30.0 minutes in 2020-2021

Josh Richardson
27 year old, 6-5, 200 lb G from Tennessee
12.5 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 2.7 apg in 31.6 minutes in 2020-2021

Josh Green
20 year old, 6-6, 210 lb SG from Arizona
2.5 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 0.6 apg in 12.5 minutes in 2020-2021

Jalen Brunson
24 year old, 6-1, 190 lb PG from Villanova
11.7 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 3.6 apg in 24.1 minutes in 2020-2021

Outgoing Players

Zach LaVine
25 year old, 6-5, 200 lb SG from UCLA
28.9 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 5.1 apg in 35.7 minutes in 2020-2021

Lauri Markkanen
23 year old, 7-0, 240 lb SF from Arizona
19.1 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 0.9 apg in 30.4 minutes in 2020-2021

Coby White
21 year old, 6-5, 195 lb PG from North Carolina
15.3 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 5.3 apg in 33.3 minutes in 2020-2021

Garrett Temple
34 year old, 6-5, 195 lb G from LSU
9.1 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 1.9 apg in 27.8 minutes in 2020-2021

This one could make a little more sense to the Mavs. Not so sure Chicago does it, though. Maxi-Markkanen-Luka-LaVine-Coby could be pretty good starting unit with run-n-gun playing style. Defense may also be better. At least, there's no more mismatches everywhere.

I'd make that deal if I was Dallas.

It would leave them with a payroll of just $70M this summer with the following players:

PG White/Brunson
SG Richardson
SF Luka/Finney-Smith
PF Markkanen/Kleber
C Carter

I realize there aren't many good free agents, but that kind of flexibility gives you options. Worst-case is you resign Otto Porter and go find one more center and it's still a real good team.

I think any deal that involves KP going to Chicago would have to include Levine coming back to Dallas.

Pass from the Bulls. Porzingis' injury history doesnt help him any. And that resulting bulls team isnt good enough to give away the youth and cap flexibility.

That would be a significant over pay by Bulls.

Think there's too many moving parts, it can be scaled back a ton. If ATL can be involved where they get Georgia born Wendell Carter and asset from Chi, Dal gets Capella, Felicio, filler, Chi gets Porzingis and filler, I'd love it

Put me down this is too much. I'd take out White/Burke altogether. Then I'd let Dallas decide between Lauri or a protected 1st rounder. If Dallas isn't sold on paying him or would prefer not to have his cap hold on the books, then replace his value with a first.

But as it stands in the OP, I have Chicago overpaying a bit. Now I understand sometimes that's what you have to do in order to get a team to turn loose of the best player. I just wouldn't overpay for a player with the risk that comes with KP.

Let me help you out, there's no way CHI does this. Awful all over

Their lineup becomes
Brunson Satoransky
Richardson Valentine ^^^^ and that are the worst parts
KP, Carter, Gafford Felicio Yeah that's the third worst part
Young Kornet
Williams Hutchison

except for Porzingis starting it isn't a better lineup, does he make up for the 44 PPG from Lavine and White?

Take out White and Burke, and it would still be a slight overpay from Chicago, which isn't necessarily bad, but where does KP/Lavine/White get you? ECSF?

There's no way Chicago agrees to that. Levine is probably better than Porzingis as it is. Once you factor health, he's easily more valuable. And then factor positional needs, and it really doesn't make sense.

Neither team should do that. Lavine is a terrible fit with Luka and the whole point of Chi trading for KP would be to pair him with Zach for a playoff run

I’d be happy with White and Lauri. Chicago can keep Otto, well keep Powell. Make the money work with Thad.

The last thing the Bulls will trade for is another injury prone player.
