Gobert has to be the most overrated perennial DPOY contender in recent history
And it's purely off physicality. Seeing him get bullied by 20 year old Zion( who at his young is bullying majority of the league to be fair) then whining to the refs and media was pretty pathetic. He then follows it up by getting bullied by Embiid.
Great shotblocker/ rim protecter but he's pretty much neutralized by any skilled bruiser. He benefits playing in a very offensive friendly, small ball league where most Cs are really PFs or similar build. Couldn't imagine ever seeing the Ben's, Mutombos, Dwights, Alonzos getting pillaged like Gobert does. Sorry not sorry.

I think it’s D Mitchell who’s even more overrated, can’t believe he almost won rookie of the year, almost, but he never did, he again thinks he did, like how he thought he beat the 76ers.

Like everybody else some players have really bad matchups... If you point out those particular cases on Gobert then you have to do it on everybody else that is a top defender. His overall defense is by far the best in the league, nobody impacts the game on the defensive end of the floor like him. Another overreaction after one game. Predictable.

One on One, good offense always beats good defense. If you want to "stop" a top offensive player in the league, you gotta scheme for it as a team. One man won't get it done

Simmons clamped up little Bitchell, took him 34 shots to score 33, didn’t need any scheme, or does midget chucker boy just suck?

I said it on the other Jazz thread but i don't understand how he has the same volume of shots that Dame and Curry have per 36 with the shooting the Jazz has around him.
Is just baffling.

Gobert is definitely a one-dimensional defender when compared to Ben Simmons.
If the powerful interior player has no problem scoring on Gobert, then what does Gobert do? He's lost.....because he can't defend a guard or small forward....
Ben Simmons whereas can contain or stop multiple positions.

Mitchell isn't an elite offensive player, he's always been a below average efficiency guy that got stats because he wanted to be the man.
He's like Monta Ellis drafted by a good team.

Gets cooked by AD as well.
Great 82 game regular season defender. But you don't want him in crucial matchups or in the playoffs.

Bruh, how hard is it to understand that a team with a top 3 defensive rating where you have the starting lineup of Mitchell-below average defender/Conley-average/Bojan-below average/Royce-30 to 40 ranked nba defender HAS to have a transcendent DPOY in order to have that top 3 defensive rating?
Why are people here such prisoners of the moment? I'd rather say they're not, they just have their own ugly little agendas so they pretend to be prisoners of the moment to push those agendas. It's really sad to see, people don't want to observe the beautiful truth happening on the basketball courts, they just wanna push false narratives that might benefit their guy. And for what?

Gobert is awesome. He's just more of a team defender than a 1-on-1 guy. It's why I want to see Simmons win DPOY though. He can't protect the rim, but his versatility is unparalleled. Even he gets cooked by smaller guards 1-on-1 from time to time though.

He seems pretty hated too. It’s no surprise Embiid and joker would relish destroying him but AD isn’t really that guy and Zion is nice to a fault but even they go for his neck.

Re: Gobert has to be the most overrated perennial DPOY contender in recent history
Gobert is an amazing defender. Especially if you consider that he hasn't got elite teammates on that end. Yes, he won't be able to shut down the jokic/giannis/ad/embiids of the league but if you expect him to shut them all down while he's trying to cover the matchups of his teammates as well, you better go play 2k.
Gobert doesn't have Simmons, Smart or Holiday.
Get him out of this team and ask yourself. Where would jazz defense be without him?
Will you ever be able to stop overreacting after a couple of games?

That's like saying LeBron is an overrated defender because Durant dropped over 30 ppg on elite efficiency against him in the Finals multiple times...
There is no defense against scoring juggernauts when they are in the zone... Maybe there are more ideal defenders in the league in terms or matching up to certain guys (like Marc Gasol against Embiid) but that doesn't make Gobert overrated...

You're saying that his primary job is to guard other centers basically - no, that's not why he is a DPOY contender. Centers are not scoring threats usually. Post defense is n that valuable because post offense is incredibly inefficient.
Rudy Gobert absolutely does "defend" perimeter players, it's why he is a defensive player of the year. He's the last line of defense in the paint, that doesn't have much to do with how good the opposing center is (and realistically how many great offensive centers are there in the NBA, two?).
Rudy Gobert is a hindrance to everyone on the court, defense is not man to man.

I don't want to invoke the "c word" on here, but if your only way of analyzing defense is matchups/man to man/on-ball... you're a casual. (i'm sorry lord they made me say it, I promise I won't do it again.).
Gobert was never special because of his man-to-man defense. The guy came into the league at 230lbs, he was never built to bang. Gobert is special because he's got ridiculously long arms, has great anticipation, and is graceful in his rotations. Gobert's job is to protect the paint and make life hard for the entire other team, not just one guy. 1 on 1 post defense... isn't a special skill. Andrea Bargnani was a pretty sick 1 on 1 post defender... and he's one of the worst defensive 5s we've ever seen play 30mpg.
Ben Wallace was my favorite player in the early 2000s, and while he was a really good one-on-one defender, that's not why he was winning DPOY. He won DPOY because of his "no-fly zone"; he made it really hard to get easy shots in the paint. Wallace wasn't matchup-proof either. Just like Rudy is skinny, Ben was short. He'd rough up KG and Duncan, but sometimes they'd just turn and shoot. Rudy can still bother Jokic/Embiid with that length, but they're going to try to body him every chance they get.
Believe it or not, DPOY is not an award for: "how well you matchup with the best players at your position". It's about overall defensive impact. Rudy Gobert is a defensive monster. Utah is a top 3 defense this year, despite having a more offensive slanted roster.

I'm appalled by people still talking about "1 vs 1" basketball. Very rudimental kind of thinking
