Multiple threads but I just wanted to post that it's refreshing to see movement, changes, ambition and risk. It's been about 20 years.

The best use of Lauri might really be a S+T if we're not going to have cap room.

I still need to see a post-trade deadline cap breakdown, but one of my first thoughts was that if this is it, and we can’t afford a playmaker like Lonzo, then **** it. Sign Lauri and hope for the best.
If we end up with this core and 2 of Lauri, Coby and Patrick Lee Williams pan out, we’re in great shape. Now that mini-rebuilding is off the table, I’m less inclined to trade Lauri.
With the Aminu deal, the Bulls likely won't be below the cap next year. If they cut both Thad and Sato, they would have some amount of money but I doubt it would be enough to sign Sato and Thad level players.

Why?
If mediocrity means not watching another 5 years of 20-30 win seasons that only net us the likes of Coby White and Wendall Carter, then sign me up.
Like I said before, I am okay with a playoff team that has a 2nd round team/ECF ceiling. At least it's entertaining.
And probably has better odds of breaking out one year than praying that we one day even get that generational talent.
Reinsdorf, is that you?
Regarding the poor drafting, that should be taken care of with AK.

There is more to improving the team than GarPax garbage way of standing pat, hoping for lottery balls, and drafting busts.
Lastly, players nowadays are dictating destinations as FAs. Focus on winning and building a winning culture. Cont to have some projects for developmental reasons. Cont to draft players that are fit into our winning culture. Excellent strong start by AK. Literally two middle first rounders for an All Star center.

I mean, I wish I was a billionaire and owned an NBA franchise...
And even if AK turns out to be a great drafter, the hit rate of blue-chip elite NBA players beyond the top 5 is not very impressive. But by all means, lets continue sticking with mediocre talent and follow the blueprint of the likes of the Kings, Magic, and, until recently, the Suns (who then made a similar type of move and are winning now).

Then I won’t be arguing with ZOMG anymore. Hell with it. Give Lauri his $80 million and cross your fingers.
Then you still have Coby and Williams to develop as players or assets.
Once a pickle, never a cucumber again.

A 30 year old all star center in a game where big men are less important than ever, except defensively. Unfortunately he's not a great defensive anchor.
I know doing something is exciting, but I don't feel better about the Bulls odds of winning a championship any time soon because of this move. That is the objective, lest we forget.

My thoughts: I'd have rather rebuilt.
But in terms of impact player and value, this is a good move. Let's face it, Carter was a bench big. With Vuc, the firsts will be 20+. This team will be in the playoffs this year with this move. Lavine and Vuc are enough to propel us to the post season. I don't know that I would have gone for a 30 year old C. Particularly when he doesn't protect the rim. But I can see the value and the push. And honestly, when this is all said and done, we won't have given up much of anything. Good use of the picks.

We don't really need a playmaker if you run the offense through Vuc. He's going to play that Jokic/Sabonis role (currently being occupied by Thad by default). What you really need is a guard that can defend PnR on the other side of the ball while being able to spread the floor for Vuc/Zach to operate.

That's kind of where I am at. I suspect the Bulls will try to be over the cap so they have the full MLE this summer. When Zach's extension kicks in, it will be paid for by Thad and Sato expiring.
The Bulls can pretty easily stay in that window between the salary cap and lux tax for a few years. After Lauri, the next young guy looking for a big raise will be Coby, and, well . . .
One of the big reasons why I wanted Vucevic is that he has a great contract.
The only thing Chicago has to worry about with Lauri is some team offering a massive, poison pill type deal that blows this all up.

The Bulls are not winning a championship this season, as the odds indicate. This move doesn't get them closer going forward either, IMO.

I think 80m for Lauri is optimistic. We'll see, though.

this is overly optimistic. more playmaking better. there is no such thing as too much playmakers.

It should be noted that the Bulls had like an 0.00001% chance of winning the title. When your title chances have to be inspected with a microscope, its really hard to tell if they are going up or down.
Just in general, winning a title in the NBA is ridiculously hard. When a team gets an all time top 10 type player, they tend to win most of them for a while and everyone else is locked out. For me, winning a title is great but I have no desire to support a team that loses intentionally for decades at a time in hopes of landing the next Lebron / MJ.

It looks semi-realistic to free up $25-30m of cap space if we don't retain Lauri and we dump one of Thad/Aminu/Sato.
