I dont know the cap ramifications. But if possible waive Kornet and sign Dieng.

I do remember that. Those were heady days. First world problems.

Why would you count Kornet
Kornet is who Drummond would presumably be replacing. So he's on our roster in a hypothetical non-Drummond scenario.

So here's what I'll say, I dont hate it either as long as it doesnt exceed 4/80. I actually think theres a chance it goes higher, but who knows.
But I think theres functionally zero chance all three of kemba, smart and fournier are on the team to start next year. The c's are right at the luxury tax line with only 11 guys + thier draft pick next year. That's before signing fournier which would then put you 20 million into the tax. That's a tax level this ownership has never paid, and that's for a team that may not get past the 2nd or even first round this year.
So either they are paying to dump Kemba's contract, or they are trading smarts 14.3 million for an asset and using that money to resign fournier.
I think you can add TT to that list. As an expiring 10 mil that maybe easier to dump
Sure. But even if you replace that spot with a minimum level center you are saving 8 million dollars which is a chunk but still leaves you pretty far in the tax. Then you have the issue that you have only rob and some minimum level guys at center which is problematic given rob's injury issues so even then you maybe have to use the Mini MLE or one of you TPEs to bring in like a 5 million a year center. So it's hard to squeeze too much savings out of thompson, plus you have to pay pick(s) to dump him.
Also my guess is its smart or kemba being moved because it opens up guard minutes for your two recent lottery picks.
The dream is probably convince some team that misses big time free agents to take a chance on kemba for 2/75 and hopefully give up no more than 1 st round pick to do it. That may be a tough sell, but then you'd create a 36 million dollar tpe and resign fournier to replace the kemba production.
If you're taking an extreme stance on the question of how much the Cs are willing to spend, why do you care about a TPE?

He was making $17 mil.
I wouldn't be spending more than 5 mil on a guy. But for vet min. Why not. He's better than Wagner, Kornet and Thompson IMO

I still think the potential guy who would have the biggest impact for the Celtics as a buyout pickup would be KO.
I'd love to see Kelly back myself rather than Aldridge but I'd be surprised if Miami or LA don't grab him and we end up with Drummond. Maybe I'm just having a bad day.
Not Miami. That would be a pure Gary Payton Rule situation.

Because its all about flexibility. If you trade Kemba there are really only two options.
1) Trade him to another team by matching contracts and bringing players back.
2) Or trade him to another team into cap space and generate a TPE.
The second option is better for the Celtics in a variety of ways. Not having to take back money/players lowers their luxury tax payments next year considerably, more so than having to take back matching salary in a trade. But a TPE also essentially preserves the max cap spot at the same time so if a REALLY good opportunity came up, a franchising changing one that makes a HUGE luxury tax worth it then you preserve that option. I'm talking like say Beal or KAT.... As we've seen in the Fournier deal just being able to take a guys contract without sending back players can have value to your trade partner.
In all likelihood you probably can't find a team to take on Kemba's whole contract without taking at least SOME money back which at least cuts into your TPE. Like the Kemba-Horford exchange listed by SmartWentCrazy a few pages ago.
Also I don't think that my stance that the c's wont go 20 million into the tax is extreme. It may be wrong, they just have to prove it because they've never gone that deep before.

It's just money saving and they have no desire to re-sign a 32 year old big in the offseason. Plus they probably want to prioritize minutes for JJJ now that he's coming back soon, as well as Porter, Tillman and Tillie as players worth developing at that position. He's way better than Drummond and Aldridge as a role player. Easily better than Kornet at least.
No way he's a 48% 3p shooter, but he's got a nice stroke and really only started taking 3s last year.

ya its on relatively low attempts, like 48 total shots. But still, its something Timelord/TT don't do so why not. John Hollinger at the Athletic had him as his #1 buyout big option.

I was thinking that, they could offer him a big deal now to entice him to go there.
My guess is they stick with Noel/Taj though, Noel has been very good for them this season

Bad news for Knicks and Celtics
If Drummond goes to LA then NYK will most definitely give probably a big or multi year offer to Dieng.
Looks like if RW3 goes down it’s TT, Wagner and Kornet

Yeah it's low volume but to me his shot looks easy and he's always been a good FT shooter for a big.

How many max contracts can an NBA team have on the books at any one time? Is it two?
If it’s two, the Nets have KD, Kyrie and Harden all on the books. Which one is not getting the max?
