Kyle Lowry Preferred Joining Heat Over 76ers, Lakers

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Mar 29, 2021 3:10 pm

The Miami Heat were Kyle Lowry's preferred team if he was traded at the deadline, sources tell Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer. Lowry's close friendship with Jimmy Butler is cited as the driving force of that preference.

The Heat can realistically create approximately $26 million in cap space while keeping the cap holds of Duncan Robinson and Kendrick Nunn. While it would be short of max cap space, it is the type of number Lowry is reportedly seeking in free agency.

The Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers were the two other teams to pursue Lowry at the deadline and neither will have cap space.

Beyond Miami, the only teams projected to have cap space are the Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Charlotte Hornets, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, San Antonio Spurs and Toronto Raptors. Toronto is likely the only other threat to the Heat in their efforts to sign Lowry.

Yeah, we were fond of Jimmy too. Too bad Brett demanded “control”.

The article seems to have forgotten the Heat traded for Dipo who now has a 31m cap hold. With Jimmy, Bam, Herro, Precious, Okpala, Ryan Andersons 5 mil of dead money and the holds on Dipo and Robinson the team has no cap space to sign Lowry....unless they let Dipo walk for nothing at the end of the season.

Butler was pissed that Brown had no control on the team and no direction - he spoke about it in the bubble.

I mean, they did give up pretty much nothing for him it feels like. Maybe this is their "lease term" See if he can still play at the same level

if they had got Lowry, there would be no Oladipo, so if they can sign Lowry this summer, yes they will and let Oladipo walk.
Having Oladipo can also be helpful in sign-&-trade if Toronto wants him

A sign and trade could work. Kyle wants $25 million each of the next two years. Who would fit that would be better than the package the Raptors just declined?

The article is also forgetting that it doesn't really matter where he wanted to end up, the Raptors didn't trade him there.

As for the Heat, why would they trade any of their young assets in the off-season for a 36 year old when they didn't trade them at the trade deadline for a 35 year old? If the Raptors want anything it will be a 2nd rounder and cap fillers maybe in a sign and trade in the off-season. Otherwise Lowry will have to see if another team out there is willing to give him 25 million a year at his age or take a pay cut for the team he would like to finish his career with.

Any team who gives any quality assets up for a 36 year old role player in the off-season needs to get a new front office imo. But hey, if the Heat or any other team want to do it, go for it.

It depends on how the playoffs go. Kyle is not a role player. Role players are not repeatedly chosen by coaches to the All Star game. He simply isn't one of the league promoted prima donnas. If a team feels they could have gone further with an experienced and talented point guard, then there will be offers. If there are no offers of 2nd rounders plus dead weight contracts then the Raptors are better off to let him go for nothing than to carry dead weight contracts. He is a very talented player, but the Raptors are not win now, and it would be a waste of his talent to stay here.
