Heat, Celtics, Knicks, Pelicans, Raptors Preparing To Pursue Bradley Beal

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Mar 29, 2021 3:19 pm

Bradley Beal will be a free agent in 2022 so while he and the Washington Wizards have wanted to remain together, a long-term decision is impending.

League sources tell Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer that Beal's decision to play through this season with Washington is as much a commitment to give things a try with Russell Westbrook at is about making a life-altering decision during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sources add that the Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks and New Orleans Pelicans are among the teams with interest in pursuing Beal. One league source also states that the Toronto Raptors are a sleep team for Beal, which may have contributed to Masai Ujiri's reluctance to trade away Kyle Lowry since he believes they can contend again next season.

A number of other teams have also been linked to Beal by other media outlets, most notably the Golden State Warriors.

Too soon for this discussion. One thing worth mentioning when a player of Beal's caliber is coming up on the trade market, few teams logistically have a chance. Beal and his agent will have a HUGE say in where he ultimately winds up if it's not Washington.

They'll have input but most of the top contending teams (as Beal wants to contend) have emptied their war chest of assets, especially draft capital. Miami won't go after Beal, they have Dipo now and no space. Nets are full lol. Knicks are far from contending. Lakers have nothing atm to trade with - no picks and who really wants Kuz? I think the teams that can conceivably put a solid bid in for Beal, would be the Pelicans and Raptors. Raptors might have the edge though as the Raptors will have a top ten pick in this years much ballyhooed draft .

The Celtics shouldn't even be mentioned. Danny Ainge isn't going to give up the pieces required to get Beal.

Ainge will finally give up Marcus Smart after 2020-2021 season. Why? It would be obvious. Ainge paying Smart pretty cheap money currently and Smart will be expiring/pending free agent after 2021-2022 season. So this off season is the best to off load Marcus Smart rather than try to resign him. So expiring Marcus Smart and two unprotected first one picks for Bradley Bea (who has player option after 2021-2022 option) l plus fillers.

That's just how Danny Ainge rolls. Than celtics can claim they almost got Beal.

Leonard's LA demands didn't keep him out of Toronto.
Dwight Howard never got Stan to send him to Brooklyn.

Deron Williams and Blake Griffin didn't even ask to be traded out of Utah and LA respectively
Cousins wasn't asking to go to New Orleans nor Rondo to Dallas.
Neither PG13 or Melo or CP3 wanted OKC

For every AD/PG/CP3 to LA or Kyrie to Boston there are players/agents who have to compromise. Star players have enormous leverage, but every situation is different.

It's strange how so many people keep saying that the Lakers have no picks, but we hardly hear about the Clippers and Heat who actually have no first round picks. By this summer, the Lakers will have the ability to trade a future first round pick outright and two swaps, which is more than most current contenders have to offer. They'll also have multiple second rounders available. By next trade deadline, they may have multiple quality players to trade as well, highlighted by a fast improving THT.

I do agree that the Pelicans and Raptors should be considered frontrunners for any Beal trade. The Pels have their war chest of draft picks and could potentially swap Ingram, while the Raptors potentially will have a lottery pick, future picks, and solid young players from their roster to offer.

If Beal wants to contend why is he not forcing his way off the Wizards? Wizards are about as far from contending as you can get giving how much money they have tied to 2 guys and the lack of talent on the rest of the lineup.

Miami has a much better pick situation than the Lakers and better young piece too. Hero has a higher ceiling than talen Horton then you have achiuwa,kz okpala, Robinson rfa, Nunn rfa both small cap and oladipo in a sign and trade. Heat can trade all their picks starting on 2025, Lakers will need help with new Orleans and that is not beneficial to pelicans. Ultimately he decides but Miami package looks more appealing to wizards than anything the Lakers can offer. Let's not forget LeBron has 1 leg out of the lakes the moment his son gets drafted

this is the definitive example of clickbait and media hype, so in a year and half these teams may be interested because he may want to leave even though so far he has consistently said he wants to stay, can that change of course but maybe we should at least wait till the actual calendar year that this is possible to entertain such nonsense. Hey in a year and half and asteroid could hit earth or we could have a nuclear winter, best start digging

You are totally wrong about Miami's pick situation. Their 2023 pick is protected through 2026. That means they can't trade any future 1st rounders outright until after the 2021 draft. They can, however, trade their 2027 pick as a swap. After the upcoming draft their 2028 1st round pick becomes available for trade outright. Teams can't trade picks that are caught up in protections.

The Lakers have had the 2027 pick available for trade all season, so they've been in a better situation than other contenders in that regard. Again, it's strange that so many people have been confused on this issue.
2023 first round draft pick to Oklahoma City
Miami's 1st round pick to Oklahoma City (via L.A. Clippers) protected for selections 1-14 in 2023, 1-14 in 2024 and 1-14 in 2025 and unprotected in 2026 [L.A. Clippers-Miami, 7/6/2019; L.A. Clippers-Oklahoma City, 7/10/2019]

I just went back through past comments, and we already discussed the Miami draft pick situation. The information is readily available, so don't take my word for it. Look it up yourself.

As for players with trade value, evaluating player values between the upcoming draft and trade deadlines is speculation, but I agree that Herro has a ton of upside, and currently is the best trade chip between the Heat and Lakers. I like Achiuwa's potential too. Okpala currently has zero trade value, and those other guys may or may not be tradeable depending on how free agency plays out. Sign and trade is very limited, so combining a bunch of free agents in exchange for one big salary doesn't work. Free agents are generally weak trade assets for this reason.

The Lakers don't seem like they would be in the mix for Beal until next trade deadline, when their players would be already signed, and the potential or lack thereof of their younger players will be more clear. By then it could be too late. We'll see.
