DeMar DeRozan To Take 'Wide Open' Approach To Free Agency

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Apr 7, 2021 6:43 pm

DeMar DeRozan plans to take a "wide open" approach to free agency in terms of which teams he'll consider signing with.

DeRozan had planned to become a free agent during the 2020 offseason until the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

Coming off a five-year, near-max contract he signed with the Toronto Raptors, DeRozan is one of eight players to average at least 21 points, seven assists and four rebounds per game this season.

DeRozan will likely be the best wing on the free agent market beyond Kawhi Leonard.

I'm curious to see what kind of contract he gets. I can't imagine a team is stupid enough to give him the max. It's been proven that no team is ever winning a championship with him as the first or second option.

DeRozan would fit in perfectly with the Heat

Bam / Butler / Derozan / Oladipo & co.

How bad would their 3pt% be? MIA is already #28 in the NBA.

We've seen a lot of good(not great) players get big paydays in FA markets where there isn't a lot of options for teams and this off season looks to be that exact scenario. I'd almost be surprised if he doesn't make at least as much as he did this season, if not more.

Yeah the Heat don't have space for that. Butler + Bam + Oladipo's cap hold alone is about $95m, and the rookie deals add another $8m or so. That leaves them with like $7-8m to sign Derozan with beneath the cap. And that also means they have to renounce all their other players: Dragic, Nunn, Duncan Robinson, Iggy, etc. Not a good move.
