The Appreciation of Derozan from a distance thread
No, we don't want him on our team again and he has some serious flaws in his game.
However, if you take a step back, the Raptors have drafted one heck of a player there and was easily the best player available in that 9th spot.
The guy transformed from a very raw player to a very skilled midrange/point guard type player.

I'd bring him back to retire his jersey next to Kyle's

I would bring him back on a vet min contract to play on our 2nd unit with a re-signed vet-min Lowry.

He doesn't have to be brought back to retire his jersey

Re: The Appreciation of Derozan from a distance thread
I was really hoping Pops would unlock part of his game. On the defense or 3 point shooting.
I pop into Spurs reddit threads now and then and they talk about his awful defense from time to time (haven't kept up lately though). And seeing his lack of 3 point attempts is a bit sad.
There was a report that Masai basically said if you want to be like Kobe for the Raptors you need to get better at 3 point shooting. He's such a hard worker too.
It looks like Pops has just accepted Demar is somewhat of a finished product or Demar lost confidence in his 3 point shooting. I'm happy he's still effective and become such a great playmaker over time.
However in 2021 it's really hard to have a player who struggles on defense and 3 point shooting be your first or second option. Best thing Casey did was bench Demar in the playoffs.
Love the guy though and hope he gets his closure one day with Toronto.

Re: The Appreciation of Derozan from a distance thread
I would love to see how Derozan's game would mesh with today's team.
Derozan had his best year when they decided to give Nurse more leeway in the offensive scheme while Casey was still the head coach.

He would fit terribly with Siakam. They’re both 3/4’s in the modern game who aren’t good shooters. Siakam is on pace IMO to be a better defending and shooting Demar.
It’s unbelievable to me such a “hard worker” hasn’t improved his shot in over a decade.

I think he hit a few threes vs us this season. He has the ability to hit them especially since he is a hard worker.
EDIT: like he can improve on it if he works on it more and tries to integrate it into his game

based on the interview we had from him about his mindset - he doesnt want to integrate 3pt shooting
he said he wanted to prove to everyone he can be a 2pt player and still be effective and light up the league, then one season he got annoyed everyone said he couldnt do it, so he worked it into his game and forced 3pters -- see 18-19 season where he had a career high 3.6 attempts per game with a 31% clip - just to show the world he could, but he doesnt want to
im sure just like he doesnt want to try on defense

Just to further my point. If you read Spurs fans criticism (one post isn't a brush against all), they have the same criticisms many here did as a Raptor years ago. 3 shooting makes him a liability. Defense is a problem.
https://www.reddit.com/r/NBASpurs/comments/mir3bb/i_am_not_a_demar_hater_at_all_but_i_do_want_to/gt6igbm/
I really like the guy. He's my favourite Raptors drafted talent. I wanted us to badly get him in the draft back when I was a lurker on RealGM and we were all excited for his high school dunks mixtape, worried that the Warriors would take him.
But his problem is having such a narrow focus on how to score, in a league that has moved against his skillset. He refuses to adapt and doesn't realise for as much energy he spends on offense, he gives back those points on the defense or inability to shoot the 3 with confidence.
Thanks Tubrozone!

Seeing him develop was one of the best Raptor fan experiences I have had in my life. And it's looking like OG is going the same route

His development was in line with where the franchise was at that time. He had free reigns on offense and defense, he struggled the first few years even when he was averaging 16+ ppg. If he had been on this era of the raptors as a rookie I don't seeing him becoming the player he is now.

With his work ethic he’d have developed into the player he is regardless. You guys overstate his lack of defence/

He had an interview with jj reddick a few weeks ago where jj asked why he doesn’t shoot more 3’s. Jj had observed that his 3pt form is exactly the same as his mid range...smooth mechanics in his opinion there’s no reason he shouldn’t shoot them...he suggested shooting 4-5 3’s would increase derozans scoring. I think Derozan reasoning was he’d rather stick to his strengths and not bail the defence out with 3’s.
It’s not about proving he can be a mid range scorer he just knows his spots on the floor. He’s been a 20 ppg scorer for 7-8 years now with a wide array of moves, when it comes to scoring he knows what he’s doing.

yeah for sure, I don't question his work ethic but i was just stating that at the age of 21, he averaged 35mpg and attempted 14 shots a game. He definitely got the chance to shine and show his strength with a long leash.

thanks yes it was that same podcast with JJ reddick - Demar did say he explicitly wanted to prove to people that he could do it without shooting 3s tho,
ya he knows how to score (in the regular season)
