First Rounder going to Houston

Post#1 » by theBigLip » Tue May 4, 2021 4:51 pm

I still can't believe we have traded away a first rounder to Houston for, um, I'm not sure what we got out of this.

Traded • Trevor Ariza • rights to Isaiah Stewart • 2027 second round pick (?-?) • cash considerations to Pistons for • Christian Wood • draft pick (first round pick protected top 16 in 2021-22, top 18 in 2023-24, top 13 in 2025, top 11 in 2026, top 9 in 2027, else 2027 second round pick) (?-?) • 2021 second round pick (?-?) on 2020-11-24

Since our GM can't be trusted with keeping first round picks, then at least we are protected from him doing something stupid again since all the protections means he can't be trading them again until 2027, unless we actually become a playoff team.

Depends what pick we end up giving back. If it’s a first round pick between 17-30, I don’t think it’s a bad trade.
It’s pretty much like we swapped a future first to get an extra first in the 2020 draft.

2022: Top 16 Protected - We would have to finish as one of the top 14 teams in the league next year, which is unlikely even if we finish 7th or 8th in the East.
2023: Top 18 Protected - If we're the 5th/6th seed or better it could convey this year.
2024: Top 18 Protected - If we're the 5th/6th seed or better it could convey this year.
2025: Top 13 Protected (Should for sure be conveyed this year if it hasn't been yet).

Hopefully it conveys in 2023 as that means we've made good progress forward and are on the top half of the league getting the 19th or 20th pick in the draft.

Seriously? Is this a post from draft night, or have you been in a coma for the entire season? Trading a highly protected first for Beef Stew has questionable at the time, but we hit draft gold here. We got a 19 yr old beast that will anchor our frontcourt for the next decade.

Yeah, there’s some serious Rip Van Winkle vibes in this thread right now. We made the trade because Troy saw value at 16 where Houston did not. I also feel like throwing Christian Wood in there as though he was a normal part of the trade was disingenuous. The Ariza/Pick swap part was already agreed to, the the Wood signing lumped it afterwards. Both things were independently agreed to by concerned parties.

The trade, for now, is fine. Is it possible it ends up less so in the middle of this decade? Sure. But only if all else goes wrong.

I’ll wait and see.

Yeah. I kept looking to see whether someone had resurrected an old thread or something. I honestly have no problem with this given all of the protections used.

By 2027 we'll either completely suck and keep the pick or we won't and the pick will be somewhere in the teens or later. The protections guarantee that we aren't giving away elite level talent for it.

And it's kind of hard to argue with the results we've seen so far (Stewart).

.

In reality they were two separate trades ( ariza for Wood, then pick for pick) that got added together afterwards.

Our current GM saw value in Stewart. How dare he? Stewart is a 19 year old with developing 3 point range who plays with passion.

I don’t get the issue with this trade. Now that Stewart is getting a more prominent role he’s doing fairly well. Obviously if we cough up a high 1st to Houston that could be an issue, but it’s more likely we give up a future 1st around the 20s.

Stewart is a top 10 pick in a redraft and the pick they traded is top 10 protected until 2027. I don't see any problem whatsoever with the trade.

Also, extremely odd to say "Um, I don't know what we got out of this". Um, Stewart is pretty good already and should only get better. That's what they got out of it.

As I agree with all the other responses, I love Stewart, there is pretty important point to this. Only I think you have it backwards. By doing this Weaver forces Gores to commit to the rebuilding process.

I don’t think we’ll ever know the behind the scenes with Gores, but my guess is he requested previous GMs to go for playoffs and make stupid moves. By keeping our first in limbo it keeps us from being able to trade a future 1st. I also think that’s why Weaver created some dead cap space. This way we aren’t able to commit any new long term cap space. I think they were genius moves that force Gores to commit to a rebuild and not be able to request to do anything dumb.

Weaver looks like a genius with this move. Stewart is in all the redraft Top 10 polls.

I agree on one thing: it’s not a good move if we fail to become a playoff team in this time span.

But if we fail to do that, we’ll have bigger problems. It’s a good risk given Stewart looks solid. Trading a first rounder for a more valuable first rounder doesn’t count as failing “to hold onto your picks”.

OP, are you honestly telling us that at this moment you would trade Isaiah Stewart for what will probably be something like a 14th in 2026? Who do you have your eye on with that pick who is so much better than Stewart?
At the end of the day, it's not about wins and losses. Teamwork, fair play, and good sportsmanship make champions of us all.

It's a guy graduating from 8th grade in a few weeks that apparently will the 14th best player 5 years from now. We clearly missed out on him.

The premise of this thread is that the GM can't be trusted to keep first round picks. Is this pulled out of thin air?

In other current news, I just found out that Tayshaun Prince was traded, Dave Bing was All-NBA First Team, and the Pistons moved from Fort Wayne to Detroit.

That kid from Syracuse can flat out shoot the rock. If they ever do a Greatest 50 Players of All Time thing I'll bet he makes the list.
