IF True and CP3 opts out, do we.............

Post#1 » by ChettheJet » Thu Jun 3, 2021 6:37 pm

Do we strip down enough to offer him the $100 over the 3 years it says

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2944098-nba-insiders-predict-huge-paydays-for-phoenix-suns-young-stars-cp3

I mean if Lonzo Ball is going to cost you $20M for 4-5 years isn't Paul for less a better option?
$33M a year really isn't that much and it's honestly only $56M over the 2 additional years added onto his $44M for next year. I would think he would opt in and go for free agency the following year and get the same 3 years. He doesn't appear to be in decline.

Vucevic, Lavine and Williams stay and they release Arcidiacono, buyout Young and Satoransky, Animnu for a SRP. That's $33M. I don't know the intricacies of trading for an exemption.

That's before any possible deal with Markkanen or moving him.

You've got Brown and Dotson under contract, maybe resign Theis and Temple

Really, really low odds of Paul maintaining his current level for two more seasons let alone three. Pretty good chance we see notable decline next year.

You won't be able to keep Theis or Temple in this scenario as you will need to renounce their cap holds. You might be able to get Temple back on the room MLE as a FA though. Doubt someone takes on Aminu for a 2nd rounder either, but you never know.

Here's the exact quote if anyone's interested:

Paul has a $44.4 million player option, which according to several sources, he intends to decline with hopes of inking a new multiyear deal (perhaps in the $100 million range over three seasons). It's unclear if his recent shoulder injury changes his plans. Gordon Hayward, who has battled more severe injuries than Paul, made a similar decision this past offseason, opting out of his final year with the Boston Celtics to sign a four-year, $120 million contract with the Charlotte Hornets.

If we can get Paul for that, I don't know how we don't do it. Sure it's a lot of money, but it's only a three-year deal and with Vuc and Zach it doesn't make sense to do anything but try to go for it. Hopefully playing with those guys plus his old coach Donovan is appealing.

We'd need two things to happen for this scenario to be possible:

1.) Suns get bounced early. A Lakers comeback really helps this case.
2.) The notoriously cheap Suns to balk at giving Paul the kind of money he seeks.

Anyone know if Donovan and Paul had a good relationship?

I love CP3, but this is a trash option. He has, at most, one high level season left in him. Multiyear deals make zero sense. Sign CP3 as an assistant coach once he retires. That would be a strong long term move. Otherwise, you're just destroying the cap for a shortsighted, short term project that is highly likely to fail.

To be fair, people have been saying this about Paul for several seasons now.

Yup, it's been this way for years.

You have to do it, especially for 3 years. Everything the guy touches turns to gold. Phoenix has the 2nd best record in the West and are about to dethrone Lebron in the 1st round, something that has never happened. Cam Payne looks like a good NBA player.

It's insane how he has helped turn that franchise around.

I'd offer it to him, chuckle about how lucky the Bulls got, and watch everyone else on the Bulls get elevated as a result. He demands excellence on the court.

And remember, the Bulls just completely overhauled their training staff, and while I don't have the stats for this, felt like one of the healthiest teams in the league, aside from a few COVID times out.

That being said, the Bulls are far away from freeing up 33 million a year. Struggling to do it just for the 20-25 million required for Ball. So there would be some roster gutting, and assets lost just to bring him in.
KC: Do you still think you're a championship-caliber team?

It doesn't make any sense whatsoever for CP3 to opt out if he wishes to remain a Sun - all he has to do is sign a 2 year, $56 million extension that starts with the 2022-23 season.

So if he says he's opting out, it's either because he wants to leave PHX or he wants to pressure their front office to give him an extension.

To clear $36,945,603 in cap space, the Bulls would have to renounce their free agents and stretch & waive Thad, Aminu and Sato. Which assets are you worried about losing?

And wouldn't you expect to lose some assets to bring in an All-Star?

Nah, there's no way I'd do it. This season was an statistical anomaly in his age, that every year from now on will be less and less probable. Also, he's hurt AGAIN in the playoffs.
We should stay over the cap, use everyone not named Zach and Vuc as trade chips whilst keeping the rest of our cap opened for 22' and 23' offseasons to try for another star (and Maxing Zach out when possible).
If that doesn't work, time for another rebuild.
Constantly underwhelmed by the Bulls.

He can't do that. You can't decrease your salary like that from year to year. That's why he has to opt out.

Unless Phoenix tells him to kick rocks, I don't know why he would leave Booker+Ayton+bunch of good role players for Zach+Vuc+absolutely no good role players to speak of.

Yes. Yes. Yes.

If he's even close to the player he's been throughout his career for the first 2 years of his contract, it will be more than worth it even if he's a complete duster by the 3rd year.

I would imagine he'd want to play for a contender though, so we're really going to have to do some convincing.

The odds of people being correct on this point increase every year though right? How long do you think Chris Paul will play at a high level?

I don't know about that. How many years do you really think Paul has? 1? 2? Are the Bulls set to go all in this year as a 30 win team to really compete? It isn't the worst. By getting Vuc, we already committed to short term goals, but adding a guy who will be 37 next year as a crucial piece sure seems like an extremely short term fix with risk of really hurting you in two years.

I would feel better about us getting to the 2nd round once with this squad before falling apart and rebuilding, but I think the most likely scenario is you only get 1 good year out of Paul, possibly 0 and possibly 2, but most likely 1.

Yes, you can.

Steven Adams just did it. He signed an extension with the Pels on November 23, adding 2 years to his deal. He made $29.5 million this season. He'll make $17 million next season.

I mean the issue for Paul is staying healthy during playoffs, but as long as he has his quickness, I think he can still be productive for a few years just cause he is so freaking smart, will to win, great ball handling, and players like John Stockton have pulled it off before as he does not rely on athleticism outside of quickness. He would be perfect for this team as he would do amazing setting up Lavine and Vuc along with allowing Williams to be a complimentary player while getting easy shots. Doubt we can get him, but he would take our team to top 3 or 4 in the East in my opinion.

The fact that CP3 himself is turning down a $41M option to get a cheaper but longer term contract means he himself doesn't believe he'll be playing at the same level for the next few years.

On a 1-year deal, sure why not. But I don't see any way AKME commits themselves to 3 years of CP3.

Especially not when it's already pretty well know that they really, really want Lonzo.

1 year isn't going to be an option. Paul isn't opting out of 1 year 45M to sign a different 1 year deal with us for 30M.

Exactly. And I'm not sure AKME would choose 1 year of Paul over Lonzo being here for 4-5 years, even if it was an option.

I’d rather have Ball.

Return to Chicago Bulls
