I’m not so sure about Dragic coming into backup Lowry without getting his 19 million. Even then still seems awkward. Team committing to a similarly aged player for a lot more money. We would be better served going with a younger option at the backup PG spot. Now if we could get a young PG like Ball or even Dinwiddie then it makes sense having Goran as the vet backup.

McConnell would be an ideal choice to backup Lowry for sure.

The problem is we're trying to win now and neither of those guys is nearly as good.

Your disregarding the pride aspect here with Goran. I don’t think it’s as easy as you make it sound. Dragic and Lowry have been through many battles against each other and Dragic probably views himself as an equal as a competitor. If you give Lowry 20 or more million then ask Dragic to come back for mid level as a backup when he can probably fetch that some place else and keep his pride intact. It comes off as a slap in the face from us to even ask him to do that. Better off sending him away with a 19 mil thank you

Lowry is looking at starting with 25 mil, if Chris Paul is getting an extention starting at around 33 mil at his age, no way he takes 20. Dragic with another 20 mil. Then Duncan with another 20 mil give or take a mil or two. We are talking about over 60 mil in dollars and no real super star. 45 + mil for a pg by committee approach. Because of there age you are basically forced to get a back up, thats at least MLE money so another 10+ more like 12/13 mil. And this is not even touching getting a player with size.

Exactly. This is why we need to use Dragic’s opt in with some assets attached like Achuiwa and Okpala to get us a player who can be a key contributor at a position of need. This will help facilitate a S&T for a player that wants to sign here and the team player leaves wants to get something. Honestly it might even be for Lowry himself lol. In order to get him the most money Raps would have to do S&T.

Love Dragon, but at $20M per, no thank you.
Love Duncan too, but at $18-20M per, no thank you.
K.Nunn at $15M, no thank you.

We need to stop overpaying our players limiting the ability to add players to stretch the floor for Bam and Jimmy.

I know Evan Fournier is gonna get paid but I would rather pay him the $18-20M than any of our own FA. His defense leaves a bit to be desired, but HEAT coaching can help that.

Dragic is good as gone at his current cap hit.

But here’s the thing. There’s salary cap machinations regarding Duncan and Nunn, that make it beneficial to keep them.

If you were to come to quick agreements with Nunn and Duncan, because they are early bird free agents, their cap holds can be made as low as 1.7 million a piece(if their qualifying offers are rescinded). So $3.4 million for the total of them, while you can use up to approximately $27 million in cap space, and the ability to exceed the cap with re-signing them. That is not the case with Fournier, who would immediately sink your cap the moment you sign him.

So that’s going to be interesting to see what the decision makers do. I’d say it’s still a decent shot they bring both back. For better or worse.

I have no appetite for investing heavily in a 35 year old. A 1 year + team option is as far as I'd go with Lowry or CP3 or Dragic. Unfortunately these are the options we have, and Lowry is better at this point so you sign him and let Dragic decide what he wants to do. Either way he's not getting $19 million per so ...

I don't know who you think wants to absorb Dragic at $19 million, or what we'd be forced to take back in order to do him that favor. Dragic at $19 million is a negative asset. That space needs to be cleared or we can't afford to pay Lowry $20 million, so we can't afford to take any contracts back for Dragic in a trade.

The team option needs to be declined unless we intend to keep him here as our starter ... which I doubt. Declining the team option actually increases his charge against our salary cap unless we renounce his bird rights, so I just don't see any way around it.

Bam, Herro, and filler for Dame.

Sign Kawhi

Having Jimmy, Kawhi, and Dame as the stars means the rest will figure itself out.

I think that's a cap violation. Once an agreement is reached with a player, it has to be reported to the NBA and the cap space is tied up.

Sign and trade contracts need to be for at least 3 years not counting option years, so we'd be committing at least $60 million to a 35 year old PG over 3 years.

There's no **** way I'd do that.

The only thing I can say for sure is that this GMing thing is a lot harder than looks. The NBA needs to get rid of some of these stupid arbitrary rules.

Our aim for the offseason should be to S&T for both Kawhi and Lowry using Dragic, Iggy, Robinson and Nunn for the salary.

Lowry already seems keen to come since we were close to trading in mid season.

My bet is Mav's go hard to sign Kawhi in the offseason and if he can be convinced to want to go to Miami, we could just strongarm the Clippers into a deal they don't necessarily like so they can avoid having him leave to another Western Conference team for nothing.

If Clippers lose and Kawhi and Ibaka leave for nothing which could be likely they have limited options to fill out their roster. Max cap room they can get if they release all their FA's is 19mil and they have notable guys like Reggie Jackson, Patrick Patterson, Nick Batum and Luke Kennard to re-sign. If Kawhi doesn't stay then I'm certain the Clippers will try and facilitate a S&T for him and if they do that will be on Leonards terms, so its all about convincing Kawhi.

what's most likely gonna happen were going to resign everyone in the core that Riley likes. like Butler, Dragic, Herro. Nun & Duncan are probably going to be either traded or let go based on their market value. Iggy is definitely on his way out one way or another for the team to sign midlevel to minimum level players fill out the rest of the roster. There's not much out there to get, I feel like KLeanord is staying in LA, if anything their going to trade Paul George. Chris Paul is too damn expensive and has health volatility during the end of the season heading into the playoffs. Small slim chances are Beal who looks to be unhappy. Based on what Riley said on his closing statements sounds like hes pushing to make BAM an official PF and have him work with sets with a natural center, but this is based on BAM actually improving his Midrange & 3pt shooting.

How does the cap work with this if we used them in a sign and trade scenario? Hypothetically can we do this, use our 27mil to sign Lowry to his contract then S&T Duncan, Nunn and Precious for someone like Kawhi if he commits and they agree to go to LA?

Only way I see Kawhi staying if they lose again in the 1st round is if they somehow manage to trade PG13 for someone like Lillard. But it's going to be hard for Lillard to force his way out of Portland being signed for another 4yrs. Plus don't know that Portland would prefer to try again with PG13 rather than get a farm of assets from some other team.

Im on board with trading everyone on the roster for Kawhi Leonard ang build form there
1. Herro 2. Bol Bol 3. Seko 4. Bruno
unless we trade up for Barrett or trade down for PJ Washington

Return to Miami Heat
