The nerd-heads, the tech a-holes with their spread sheets, the measurables/metrics/let's look at the data folks -- they have killed sports. Truly. Baseball is unwatchable now. In basketball, fully 1/3 of the league is trying to lose (some artfully, some remorselessly). It mocks the very idea of competition. Everything now is -- be strong and loaded and go for it ... or gut your team and lose shamelessly (and shamefully). No in-between. And it sucks. S U C K S.

This is a thought-provoking post -- cool!

I wonder if it's really the tech-nerds that are to blame, however. I think maybe it's a cultural thing, where a championship is all that matters. Being #1.

&, it must be obvious, it's not just sports. It's a cultural disease.

Probably at its worst in politics.

YES. Although also: media.

Media has been gutted/ruined/perverted because of metrics/measurables/observable data.

Good read on why the Heat keep 40 y/o Udonis around.

Not good. I would think the Celtics are above us in terms of destinations coaches want to go to (assuming Stevens has a clean reputation)

An Eastern Conference executive noted that Ainge was also in discussions to assume a role at NIH or move into a Cabinet position, but that he elected not to.

LOL...!

I bet Stevens will be a very successful NBA executive.

Kinda weird that Boston had their worst season in years and still promoted their coach to GM. Maybe he'll do well - but I think it looks bad that they didn't interview any minority candidates. That may or may not be a turnoff to the better coaching candidates available. Who knows - Stevens might end up wanting to return to coaching - it's what he's done best.

Lakers point guard turned down $80 million before the season, and now it looks like a disaster

It would have to be a huge turnoff. Anyone but the biggest name coaches would feel like Stevens is always looking over their shoulder, ready to fire them and step in after a losing streak. And it would have to be hard for Stevens to keep from trying to coach the team from the GM box. Not a good situation for a new coach. Hopefully Brooks ends up there - he's an established guy who should be able to manage a potentially overbearing GM. Plus, Brooks would play Marcus Smart at power forward sometimes, so a win for us.
Can't say I do. Who else gonna shoot?

I could see a big money 1 year deal from the Knicks make a lot of sense for both sides.

All it takes is one stupid GM but most players do truly believe they are alot better than they actually are. Rare is a player wise enough to recognize his own limitations and correctly gage his potential market.

They should tell the Nerlens Noel story to any non-all star that's hoping for a big pay day.

Agreed. This is honestly one of the strangest and dumbest moves I've ever seen from a front office.

In one fell swoop, they dumped a good GM and a great coach while simultaneously discouraging any other top tier coach from being interested.

I mean Bostons far from a rebuild so I'm not that worried about them.

This move is probably a year away, but I'd love to see a Wall buyout followed by him playing with the Bucks. I think it'd be a terrific fit and I'd love to see him enjoy some winning.

My fear is him signing with the Heat. A bunch of off the court stuff to distract him and I don't love the on court fit.
