How big is D'Antoni's role in Brooklyn?

Post#1 » by LesGrossman » Thu Jun 10, 2021 11:16 pm

Hearing MDA applied for the Blazers, i wonder how big the impact for the Nets would be. How much do you think is really Nash, and how much in game and preparation wise is this MDA? The "big 3" have so far created remarkably little drama (apart from Kyrie's unforseeable decisions to leave the team every once in a while) and they might just work out together, but what happens if they lose their veteran assistant coach? Is there any other more important assistant anywhere?

At this point, the infrastructure is in place, it will not effect the team too badly, especially given that the transition would not happen until after the Playoffs. Effectively a non-factor.

I mean, let's face it, they're screwed once he leaves.

About as big as Nash’s, which isn’t big.

I think they'll be fine. he has the experience of seeing it all, but hes not exactly known for his adjustments. What he instill rather than offensive sets is more of a philosophy of spacing. At this point late in the season they'll be ok and no doubt Steve nash was assisted by a seasoned head coach who has not only had a lot of success in this league, but is a true and true players coach who guys want to ply with and who tries to simplify the game as well.

I think he'd make the trailblazers a continued offensive powerhouse, but Nurkic will suffer with him as he doesnt do post with MDA. Their Defense, unless they get a defensive specialist like MDA had with Jeff bzdelik will also suffer so not sure its a good playoff hire to take them over the hump come the end of the season.

I think MDA was a perfect fit with the pelicans. He can unlock so much potential by letting young guys run n gun and zion and ball would be an absolute nuissance in that offense and then after a couple years of great offense then you bring in the defensive coach to take em over the playoff hunt.

Not sure its what will take blazers over the hump, Lillard may continue to ascend into god mode with this though

Mike-D is a brilliant offensive coach. Just as Thibbs is brilliant defensive coach. They should really team up. I bet Nash doesn’t do as much ‘coaching’ as Mike-D. Mike-D is definitely helping Harden so much with making good decisions. Nash probably helps everyone get along

They still have Jacques Vaughn and Ime Udoka beside Nash. The Nets will be fine. The seamless integration of Harden onto that team with limited playing/practice time is all D'Antoni though, as expected from his former head coach.

We can only speculate obviously, but I would guess he’s more important than Nash

I would love to see what Dame and D'Antoni do together but I also want Portland to succeed.

this

role on the nets?
big role if they fail, no role if they win

if he go to Porland and loss to the Finals, "he is a loser"

You mean other than him being the most influential coach on modern NBA basketball?

D'Antoni was coaching long before the league became a 3pt shooting league. You're right though. Everyone wanted to copy the coach who's never won a championship lol.

Because he's arguably the greatest offensive coach of all-time? With innovative systems, he lead two separate teams to multiple seasons of #1 offense in the league, year after year.

Everyone likes to copy from a ringless guy but any bball fan will see that he save USA basketball from being conquered in international scene, who wouldve thought that for americans to regain dominance in basketball just do the seven seconds or less

Yes, this is why I said he was "the most influential coach on modern NBA basketball". You wouldn't say that about someone who just showed up. D'Antoni's been coaching this way since he was back in Europe, and if the other coaches in the NBA were smart, we've have been in the pace & space era decades ago.

Re: copy a coach that never won a championship lol. Is it not clear to you the way D'Antoni's techniques have made offenses much, much more effective than NBA offenses used to be? Forget about the rings for a second, do you understand how we got here?
