Difference is that he didn't seem to hit him in the face, and it wasn't as much of a wind-up. Hard foul, but Jokic's was super unnecessary.

Well the Simmons foul was ruled F1, so by definition of the rule it was deemed unnecessary. What elevates an F1 to an F2 is unnecessary AND excessive. I'd argue that body-checking Collins in midair was a bit excessive

In fact the Simmons foul should be a flagrant 3 if the Jokic foul was flagrant 2. Jokic made full contact with the ball and was actually making a play on the ball. It was one of the worst flagrant 2 calls I have ever seen. Would they have called it on any of the more marketable "stars"? Probably not.

Simmons went for all body while a guy was in the air and had no intention of getting the ball.

At least he was conceivably playing defense and not whacking someone 90 feet from the hoop. Makes it different.

At least Nikola was going for the ball, and actually got the ball on that play. Simmons was going for the foul. Both should be flagrant 1 in today's NBA.

Jokic said himself he was intentionally trying to foul hard. Hitting the ball, or not, it was a super poor choice on his end. Can't put the refs in position to toss you, but I understand wanting to pack it in early when no one else on the team is doing much to help.

That looked like a foul on Collins, actually pretty dangerous. If anything, that’s what should be considered for a flagrant. Could have taken out Howard’s legs and injured him, went low for no reason. Obviously his face is gonna get hit with an elbow when you go low like that and try to take out a dude’s legs.
