I'd be curious if they discussed this with Tatum before the hire. I think it's a solid move.

He ran the Sixers defense last year and it was ass. Hopefully he figured things out with that.

Don’t really know too much about him. It’s unlikely to be an upgrade on Brad right? And it’s unlikely Brad is an upgrade to Ainge despite our complaints about the two of them.

Have a feeling we will start to miss them in their roles next season.

I'm not going to pretend to really know who makes a strong coaching candidate, but he checks a lot of the boxes that I think were important:

1) He has a former player's perspective
2) He has a black man's perspective
3) He's got a relationship with Tatum/Brown/Smart from USA and reportedly all endorsed him
4) No head coaching experience but extensive NBA assistant time

I was hoping for cassell or billups. Hopefully the celts werent turned down and this is plan c.

Time will tell. But yeah, for whatever (valid) criticisms there are to make, Ainge and Stevens each had good track records in their role. Perfect? No. But neither one of them sucked, that's for sure. Stevens as a GM and Udoka as a coach could each be legitimately terrible in their roles. And to be as good as what we had is still a solid standard to live up to.

I think that's always the risk with change. But sometimes, even if the new guys don't ultimately prove to be as good, the mix could just be better for this group.

Same here. Cassell was my first choice. Then Billups.
But, Udoka could be a good fit, too.

Solid hire with a good resume, and he's legit off the Pop coaching tree (7 years as an assistant w/ the Spurs I think), so curious to see how that goes because Pop's coaching "tree" hasn't been all that impressive so far (Mike Brown, Jacque Vaughn).

So far, Budenholzer is the most successful guy from Pop's tree, and he hasn't exactly been w/o his critics. I suppose you can count Kerr as someone from Pop's tree as well, though technically he was just a player and never any kind of coach.
Brian Geltzeiler: You see Mark Jackson getting a head coaching job as early as next year?

Adrian Wojnarowski: Not if people make calls on him. Not if an organization is doing their homework and knows all the things he brings with him.

I'm happy with this move. Being an assistant for Pops should pay off.

Same and most importantly, hopefully Udoka can get through to Tatum and Brown and preaches ball movement and effort on defense.
Good assessment:

PLO wrote:Tatum played OK - took advantage of a few mismatches - decent on the defensive end. He is what we thought he was going into the season - a technically very proficient player operating close to his career ceiling as a rookie.

Good hire. I think Boston certainly wanted to give consideration to Lawson and Hammon, but ultimately the timing wasn't right for that sort of move. Ime is a really good hire, with a similar pedigree as Hammon. Tatum/Brown will like this hire and I think Ime is ready for the role as well.
