You talk about at the time pieces of LeBron James, pieces of Magic Johnson - these are some of the greatest players of all time. But they're big, they're strong, they've got great vision, they play with speed. I think when you look at the entire package of Ben Simmons as a player, those comparisons are warranted." - Bryan Colangelo
Selecting Ben as number one overall is a bigger mistake than selecting Bargnani. And also worse than drafting Fultz over Tatum.
Atleast with Bargnani, BC drafted him because of the foresight with the landscape of the NBA which is trending towards a 3 heavy game. And you can see that he acknowledges that with his EOY seasons with the Suns ans Raps where he built teams that runs modern offense. Bargnani has the upside the issue with him is his work ethic. The only season where he really worked hard was when he almost made it as an allstar averaging like 20ppg (he was my fantasy player back then).
While Fultz was exactly the PG of today’s basketball. He can play multiple positions on defense that allows you to switch heavy on defense. Size advantage against most PGs. Score in 3 levels and is made to run PnR. Its just that nobody saw this “mysterious” injury happening
Who cares about size.. vision.. Boban has size and has 20-20 vision.
Thats the thing with drafting. Know when the data is noise. He got carried away with the “but he’s special” narrative.
The guy he should have selected was Ingram. Ingram has foundations to be a good shooter. Has freakish length and has also a good foundation as a ball handler. Even the Lakers played him some PG early on.
Ingram is Bargnani to what Ben is to LMA. The difference is Ingram was traded early on his career and he has this “near death” experience in his career that made him work his butt off because he is at risk of not getting paid like a #2 overall pick. Whereas Ben and Bargs, both number overall picks, got too comfortable with the status on their team that there was no urgency for them to work hard on their game.
There’s never been a time in history when we look back and say that the people who were censoring free speech were the good guys.
