We will never know for sure, but do you get the feeling WeltHam is down to about Choice #8 on their list of candidates? If they liked someone who liked them back they would have hired them by now.

Btw this is another reason taking so long is a problem, to assistants are all being taken
Like imagine if we hire or coach already and then picked up Kenny as their top assistant

Not really.
They requested to interview/outright interviewed at least 11 candidates so far (in no order: Hammon, Green, Lee, Mosley, Corbin, Delany, Hetzel, Unseld Jr., Kidd, Udoka and Hardaway) and 8 of them are still available to be hired. Maybe they interviewed Stotts for No. 12 as well, but maybe not.
I don't think the front office actually wanted Penny Hardaway, so I am not counting him as a guy they missed out on.
Just reading the tea leaves, you could make the case they wanted Jason Kidd and didn't land him given the early rumors and his past with Hammond. They requested an interview with Ime Udoka, but I don't think they ever got the opportunity to actually interview him because Boston hired him so quickly.
I would say they're on their 2nd choice or 3rd choice at worst.

i would agree about the penny thing. WeltHam probably told Martins "sure we'll interview penny to make you happy." knowing full well he wasnt ready to be an NBA head coach

Terry Stotts is a good coach. He's won over 500 games. He's been to the playoffs 9 times.
I don't think people are down on him so much as they're down on his fit with this situation.
Stotts is 63 years old and hasn't worked in a clear rebuilding situation like the one the Magic are currently starting in like 15 years. He's been a win now, grind out every victory you can coach for the last decade.
I'm not knocking his basketball coaching ability at all, but personally, I would not hire a veteran coach who isn't really accustomed to losing because the situation the Magic are currently in is all about player development over wins.

Does he take the job that offers a storybook (father's a legend of team) beginning to his coaching career with 2 all-stars and an easier path to playoffs and success or does he take the job with a blank canvas that he's able to paint his own picture with no stress out the gate?Knightro wrote:

A potential name to keep in mind as an assistant coach if Jamahl Mosley gets this job.
Mosley and Hunt worked together in Denver and Dallas.

this alone makes me think he really wont be that interested with the Magic job.Knightro wrote:ZeusIsLoose wrote:i am not to familiar with stotts coaching style so can someone fill me in on why he would be a bad fit here? im not advocating for him, just want to know why most are down on him

He is a coach whose priority is to win, not develop young players.

Do you mean that we are not a playoff contender?

To be fair, if I was Unseld, I take the Magic's offer. Washington is on the verge of being in a worse state than us by a country mile. That roster outside of Westbrook and Beal is dead weight and both of them have injury issues, Washington probably won't even make the playoffs next year.
He can take the less stressful job and coach a young team or he can be tied to a potential one year rental in Washington if they crash like they did last season.

I kinda agree with this. Westbrook and Beal make way too much money for the Wiz to make any significant moves. and Westbrook and Beal are nearing the end of their Prime years.

True, but the path to the playoffs is much easier, and no matter what people want to say about Beal\westbrook, they are both stars, force their teammates to lift their play. While neither of them are young, they arent exactly old. Beal is only 28 and was fractional points away from leading the league in scoring
But even looking past those 2, they have a pretty solid young core as well with Rui, deni and thomas bryant manning the frontcourt for a while and should be able to get a nice piece at 15
Yeah i get that 2 players taking most the capspace makes it tough, but thats still a team that can compete right away whereas we are years from being competitive unless alot breaks right for us

I wouldn't be surprised if Carlisle's entire staff gets wiped out in Dallas.
Would anyone be interested in Jamahl Mosley HC with our old buddy Darrell Armstrong as an assistant?

Russ, yes, Beal? Nah, he's only 28. Has a good 4 years of prime left.

But you have to factor in that Beal is heading into his walk year. Going to be a big cloud overhanging their whole season next year.

I agree but my comment was specifically in reference to Beal nearing his prime. If he stays, and he's always said he wants to, there's still, AT LEAST, 4 years of prime Beal left to coach in DC. That's attractive.
To your point, and the other posters, is 1, MAYBE 2, years of Beal before it's a broken roster more attractive than what Orlando has? It's subjective. One could argue he (Unseld) may only get 3 yrs in Orl before being fired (lol - along with Weltman).
