If Portland can’t improve its No. 2 player, the focus shifts to upgrading the third-, fourth- and fifth-best players in hopes that the sum of the Blazers’ parts can swing the pendulum in their favor. It’s not an encouraging landscape for significant change, as it appears Portland is headed toward having the same starting lineup with a different supporting cast. It has undertones of the summer of 2018, in the aftermath of third-seeded Portland being swept by sixth-seeded New Orleans. Amid the clamor for massive changes, the Blazers mostly stayed the course and reached the Western Conference finals the next season for the first time in 19 seasons.
There appears to be an inclination to run this group back again, with Billups holding the defensive reins more tightly than Terry Stotts, and seeing what a full season of Powell — should he return — could look like.
Running back the same starting lineup may not align with what Lillard was envisioning, but it’s easy to forget the Blazers (42-30) finished tied for the fifth-best record in the West and the eighth-best record in the NBA, despite McCollum missing 25 games because of a broken foot and Nurkic missing 35 games with a broken wrist and strained calf.

This has to be Sabonis? Maybe Warren?ThunderBolt wrote:

My thinking as well. Sabonis would be really interesting if they think they can run a 5 that isn't a great outside shooter next to Dray. 7 seems too much for Turner, but maybe not if there are other parts involved such as 13?

Willie Green hiring by the Pels is finally official.

Lot of interesting pieces on Indy that would look good in GS. Salary matching is tricky because you have to involve either Wiggins or Wiseman/Looney.
Would assume the bones of a deal would be Wiggins/7 for one of the centers and a wing to match salary/replace Wiggins

I think Sabonis would be a blast to watch on the warriors.

Couldn't you get there without Wiggins by signing the pick waiting 30 days and then packaging him with Looney and a filler or two?

I always forget about that. You could get there with 7/Looney and a couple minimum guys I imagine

By my math it would have to be two fillers or actually three, but conceivably, yes.
In order to come within 125%+$100K of Sabonis' salary, the Warriors would need to send out $14,770,000.
120% of the #7 pick rookie scale would be 5,466,360. Looney would be 5,178,572.
That means the Warriors still need to add 4,125,068 of salary, none of which is S&Ted due to timing. They don't have anyone fungible who makes that much...neither will any combination of two guys.
So it would need to be:
#7 pick, signed
Looney
THREE of Poole/Mulder/Lee/Paschall/Smailagic/Toscano-Anderson/Smailagic/Payton, Jr
That's a 5-for-1 trade which poses other issues. But mathematically it can be done.

5 for 1s are at least possible in the offseason. But since they would need to wait for the restriction on the pick to pass any way, they could also engage in a little sly salary ballast boosting at the same time before aggregating every one together.

Theoretically, yeah. Looney+#7 is roughly 9.5mil, then they've got about 5 guys earning between 1.5 and 2mil. So it's possible. But that adds to the already absurd tax bill they're paying.
Doing something like Wiggins, #7 and maybe a future 2nd for Sabonis and Lamb just makes things simpler. It saves GS around 2.5mil (hence the added 2nd) and gives them a somewhat functional player in Lamb, which helps to soften the blow of losing Wiggins (never thought I'd write that...)

I’m sure Indy has talked to everyone up and down the board. But again, reminder. Evan Massie is an absolute nobody with the worst track record of reporting anything and everything. He has no access to the team. He’s not ever been on any zoom’s with the team, or been in any press conferences. He’s not a reporter. His “media network” has no access. He’s just a dude with a blog who posts interesting, albeit made up, headlines.

Yeah. I’m not sure why aggregators like NBA Central and the such are using him so much lately, other than just he’s perfectly clickbait-y.

Green has joined Barton in opting out from the Nuggets. Another guy with a lot of leverage over them. Shams reports mutual interest in both and the team in a new deal.
