Media hype
Strictly as a prospect
How they’ve played out
If it’s how they were viewed as prospects going into the draft. 1-3 is pretty easy
AD
Zion
Kyrie
They were true consensus #1 picks. All 3 were viewed as can’t miss guys (AD and axion on another level).
Guys like Wiggins and Simmons had a ton of media hype behind them. But actual basketball guys weren’t nearly as high on them (still high but not Media high).
simply not true. Simmons in particular was thought to be generational. Period. A 6'10" Magic Johnson who could play defense. Only AD was thought of more highly as a prospect. I think how his career has gone has clouded people's judgements. Wiggins was also highly thought of. Media was saying he was the next Lebron and even critics saw him as potentially an elite two-way player with tantalizing athleticism, size, length and skill that hadn't been seen since Lebron. He had his detractors who didn't like his lack of aggression to take over games but almost universally people were excited about his potential. Lots of revisionist history going around.
Simmons was viewed as generational by media talking heads. But actual people that do this for a living, they weren’t even sure Simmons was the #1 player in the draft, let alone a generational prospect.
And again I don’t disagree that the media hyped up Wiggins. But again by the time Wiggins was done at KU, the actual people who pay attention were no longer calling Wiggins a generational prospect.
Givony had Ingram number 1 in that draft.
As far as the topic I'd have:
tier 1 prospects-
Zion
AD
tier 2-
Towns
Cade
Simmons
Kyrie
tier 3-
Ayton
Wiggins
Fultz
tier 4-
Edwards
tier 5
Bennett

I think lots are underrating Wiggins in this thread. Pre draft, that was a stacked draft.
Edwards is overrated by most. Weakest draft next to the bennett draft and he still wasn't clear #1.

We might have the exact same big board of how I felt when they were coming out.
I would have had Towns up a tier from the group he was in though, I was huge on him.
I was really probably more:
Towns
AD
Zion
Coming out of high school, but flipped the order after watching them in college.

Pretty low as I don't like Cade as a prospect.
1 Davis
2 Irving
3 Zion
4 Towns
5 Simmons
6 Fultz
7 Ayton
8 Wiggins
9 Edwards
10 Cade
11 Bennett
Some of the biggest Wiggins haters back then now hate Cade.

I wasn’t big on Simmons, and he’s about the level of player I expected… but for like wildly different reasons lol. I projected him pretty wrong.
Looking at this, I would have had Kyrie lower, i didn’t see enough size or athleticism for what seemed like more of a combo guard than a true point.

Re: Where would you rank Cade compared to past #1s
My person take on them as prospects:
01. Davis
02. Zion
03. Towns
04. Cade/Mobley/Green
-------^Likely hall of famers and franchise changers
05. Fultz
06. Ayton
07. Simmons
08. Irving - Absolutely loved his game but was very concerned about injuries
-------^Really good prospects with some warts/clear flaws
09. Wiggins - Felt he was all hype and little impact
10. Edwards - Significant efficiency concerns
-------^10/10 athletic profiles but with some major concerns about their impact
11. Bennett - Bad class with nobody deserving of a top-5 pick
-------^Only went #1 because nobody else deserved it either.
How I think they were viewed by media leading up to the draft.
01. Zion
02. Davis
03. Towns
04. Cade
05. Simmons
06. Wiggins
07. Ayton
08. Fultz

Strictly speaking of them as prospects, here's what I would say:
1. Zion
2. AD
3. Towns
4. Kyrie
5. Simmons
6. Cade
7. Ayton
8. Fultz
9. Wiggins
10. Edwards
11. Bennett.
People forget that after Wiggins' season at Kansas, a lot of people went from "Maple Jordan" to "Maybe T-Mac." Embiid was going to be the #1 overall pick before his injury.

I honestly don’t remember a huge Wiggins hype train outside of RealGM, which is Canada heavy. It seemed like he was viewed as the #1 guy, bur definitely not a generational talent or lock superstar.

People forget how not high they were for the first pick that year. Almost no one believed Kyrie could be better than John Wall.

Who's "they"? Kyrie was never gonna be an All-Defense guy like Wall, but on offense he's arguably the best draft prospect in modern history, or #2 behind Doncic.

This is hindsight talking. Kyrie barely played in college because of toe injury and people were not sold on that draft at the top.

Every prospect has detractors...at 18 years old, Kyrie showed elite scoring ability from every part of the floor, and was a very good point guard to boot. That's basically unheard of. Anyone who was low on him was probably just bitter about the Cavs getting another #1 pick.

nah Kyrie was that dude before he went down. Derrick Williams gained steam because of a monster season, but once Kyrie came back and looked the exact same he solidified the spot.

Kyrie’s numbers were absolutely off the charts when he played though. 57/46/90 shooting splits, amazing free throw rate, good steal rate, great AST/TO ratio. Decent size for the PG position, great quickness, all-time handles, ridiculous craftiness around the rim, polished three-level scoring ability, and what at the time looked like fantastic floor general skills. Maybe the media didn’t hype him as much as they should’ve, but he was a phenomenal prospect any way you look at it.

Re: Where would you rank Cade compared to past #1s
The media hype on Kyrie wasn't that high but he looked so freaking good when he did play. And people saw him as a two-way guy. I think people have been disappointed with his defense compared to what he had as a prospect.
I think typical draft-nik's liked him better than laymen and RGM as a whole. I remember most people thought Derrick Williams should have gone #1 overall that year and said the Cavs screwed up. So when ranking Kyrie on this list think 'where would I have put Derrick Williams'.
