Rubio was ideal for a young team not yet fully vested into a system, but with half a year, full offseason and a training camp, he becomes expendable. Finch pointed out towards the end of last season that he does not use a PG in the traditional sense. Pretty much anyone advances the ball on the break, so we have to judge Ricky on what he is “not”, based on the system. He’s not a knock down shooter, he’s not a finisher at the rim, he’s not a good on ball defender, and he’s not a “small contract”.
Prince, while not a grand slam, does check a few more of those boxes. His catch and shoot percentage opens the floor up for our primary scorers and to my own surprise, he has the ability to put the ball on the floor to put pressure on the rim. I see him as a transition type of player who’s added to help the development of your core players who you want to be the focal point of your offense, that being Edwards and in the near future even McDaniels. It’s not a sexy trade, but it’s a strategic one that moves you towards your goal. Rubio, while missed was not part of the long term plans. Let’s not kid ourselves, we knew this upon his re-entry to the fold.
