He'd probably have a really good opportunity to play as well as he ever could in Dallas.
He could also jack up a bunch of shots in Toronto if Lowry does leave and FVV is the starting PG there.

I’m just not looking forward to Monk finally being what he was projected to be but for another team. So now we’ve really wasted that draft pick. Rooting for him wherever he lands. Maybe it’ll be in OKC and he and Kemba can reunite.

Feels like Mitch and JB both felt like they didn't want to carry or deal with Cho's baggage, and that includes Monk. There clearly was a universe where something worked out between Charlotte and Monk, but the FO and coaching staff didn't think the juice was worth the squeeze.
I don't have strong feelings one way or the other.

Just like Walker, Kaminsky, Vonleh, Kidd-Gilchrist, Biyombo, Henderson, Augustin, Morrison and Felton all did?
Honestly: When have we ever had a player drafted and not re-signed by our front office who then went on to blow it up with another team?
Every player who has ever left us has pretty much been the player they have always been.

Think the final nail in the coffin was when he tested positive for cocaine or whatever it was. Sucks because he was playing lights out during that time.

I wonder if the decision came down to attitude Vs ability.
The kid has some obvious ability but his attitude towards his own development and commitment to being a professional has been questioned by others - and himself.
Perhaps if he had applied himself more over the past 4 years and not just over the past year, which also included some infractions, the front office might have felt differently about re-signing him?

Christian Wood.
Although he may not count.

Yeah we didn't draft him. Don't think anyone did tbh.

DG is reliable and can be trusted to do the work on a daily basis, Monk has never shown he can be a grown up

I agree, that pretty much spoiled his run here. Hard to regain the trust with the team to pay a dude that reckless the big bucks.

I mean, you're definitely not wrong. Doesn't mean Monk won't be the exception, but this is not something we've ever been burned on.

Re: We "Don't" Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
I really wanted Monk to work, he has the kind of game that I really love. Just couldn't get it straight in between the ears, but lots of people in their late teens/early 20s don't. I hope that he figures it out at his next stop.
I'm trusting in Mitch that he knows what is best for the team, and clearing PT for Bouknight. If we keep Graham at a decent number, having a guard rotation that includes Ball, Rozier, Bouknight, and Graham seems rather nice. Add in Hayward, Miles, PJ, McDaniels, Plumlee, and that makes a nice 9 man rotation. Another young player might ascend, whether it be Kai or Carey or Richards or whomever, or we could get a nice rotation piece with the rest of our cap space. Either way, future is here boys. Seems like a LONG way off from that Kemba, Batum, MKG, Marvin, Cody years... Mitch has turned it over into something pretty exciting.

Who I woulda took:

You can’t be burned when you constantly make the wrong choices during the draft. Almost none of those guys should have been drafted by us over another close option. Granted this was all previous regimes, but still. Monk actually was drafted where he should’ve been and he seemed to finally turn the corner this season. I do think Monk was headed in the right direction and will continue to get better.

Monk was the wrong choice in the draft as well, although not as bad as some of the ones mentioned.

Did we waste the draft pick?
Or did Monk waste his golden opportunity?
Monk’s attitude/commitment was only marginally better than May’s - and May had to have a “don’t get fat” clause written into his contract.
And still got fat anyway.

Just too risky with that cap hold and Monk's unpredictability, can't put it above him to hold out and trash Mitch's free agency plans.

A little of both.
And of course we should have taken Mitchell in hindsight but during the draft having Monk fall to us when he was projected top 5 was fantastic at the time.

That’s the frustrating thing about someone like Monk.
He made the NBA.
He was a lottery pick.
He is a great athlete
He obviously has talent.
He just doesn’t have “it”.
He doesn’t have that “it” thing that players with all that other ability he has that allows them to be great.
It’s also the thing that separates someone like Monk from someone like Walker.
Walker was so driven and worked so damn hard because he had “it”. So Walker was able to take all that natural ability, sprinkle some “it” over it (with a lot of hard work, commitment, dedication and discipline) to become a great player.
Monk hasn’t had, and likely never will have, “it”.

I *think* most of us were hoping for Mitchell when that pick came through, right? Or am I being revisionist

I think Mitchell was our target pre-draft, and then when Monk fell we couldn't believe our luck.
