not saying Fournier is a bad player. He is not. But they better not peddle Fournier as a key move. He is a role player we will have to overpay.

That is not what this FO was brought in here to accomplish.

We have at least 3 major roles (starting point, starting wing, backup center) and 2 lesser roles to fill (backup point, third power forward) and $52mm to fill them. If Fornier takes $19mm (as rumored), then it's $33mm to spread out over the rest of the roster.

That means, Fornier would likely be the largest contract we sign and therefore the centerpiece of the offseason (ala Randle).

I’d rather pay Gary Trent a decent amount more than Fournier. Fournier is uninspiring. He’s a solid scorer and ok shooter while being meh defender.

Fact is this is the Knicks reality. No stars want out and the Knicks don’t have the assets to acquire them without having nothing left on there team
At the same time they have all this cap and no real great players to add to it. And soon they gotta max Randle and rj.
The move should be sending out a few picks and finding a young player like a Sexton or SGA.
So if they ball out this year you entice Beal or lavine or someone to come to the Knicks

Lay some chips down on the table for SGA or Sexton or fox


But giving Fournier 15+ and following it up with overpaying Schroeder or Reggie Jackson or cam Payne is going to be disgusting to watch. And that is brutal

I wonder if we even tried offering to take on Love to lower the price of Sexton.. we save all this cap space up and are so unimaginative in putting it to use. Everything shouldn’t be based on free agency

I'd put their odds of winning a chip in the next decade as higher than ours with the way they're rebuilding.

Suggs has a higher upside than all our best players. Old Orlando are now in great position to collect more high draft picks in the next couple of years as Isaac comes back from injury, and their pick from the Bulls is less protected than our Dallas and Charlotte picks.

Our core is headed to the treadmill. Theirs is more high-risk, high-reward. That's better than mediocrity imo.

I still don't see how Perry has that much pull in the organization. Leon/WWW/Aller and Thibs all have more say. And Walt Perrin has more say in the draft.

Perry is the guy that makes the calls and negotiates he doesn't make overall roster decisions.

Can't really put this on him if this is the plan. Leon and WWW were suppose to be the connection people. Steve Mills could provide an offseason of Schroder and Fournier.

Let's pretend there actually is a #1 superstar option available somewhere.

We either sign this superstar through:

(1) maintaining cap space flexibility every year (i.e. only sign 1 year deals)

(2) sign players to fair or below market deals so they're tradeable assets

Going down path (1), eventually Randle, RJ and other "core" guys we might want to keep will become eligible for contract extensions and significant bumps, so we'll face maintaining cap space flexibility or being that team that only keeps rookie contracts.

Going down path (2), we'll remain competitive and as long as the contracts aren't stupid, we can send back good players to teams with disgruntled superstars that aren't looking to totally blow it up. Furthermore, any of our draft picks we send back would not be viewed as valuable as we presumably would be significantly more competitive after the trade.

I don't see option (1) as a sustainable strategy - not only is it impossible to build a team culture by signing mercenaries every offseason, but frankly, we just saw a bunch of cap strung teams free up space through trades and we lost a bunch of competitiveness through our cap space quite quickly.

Therefore, option (2) is really the only path that makes sense, even if the ultimate target is a superstar.
