Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Aug 6, 2021 8:19 pm

The Boston Celtics are believed to be offering Marcus Smart the largest extension available to them worth approximately $77 million over four years, according to Mark Murphy of the Boston Herald.

The Celtics are awaiting a decision from Smart and his agent.

Smart has been one of the best perimeter defenders in the NBA during his career.

Why can't they offer him more? They have his full bird rights.

If he turns down 4yrs at 77mil, we will have our next candidate for the 2022 Dennis Shroeder Award.

Extensions are limited to 120% of the current contract + 8% raises annually. When in free agency, that limitation is gone, I think.

If he plays like last year, yes.
If he plays like all-defensive team player shooting 37%, he might be ok.

The challenge is that if he is playing starting PG he will face a tougher challenge on the offensive side and will have less in the tank for the D side this year.

My guess would be that in FA he might get more 2 year deals….
