Stalin was a butcher. And he was very accomplished at it.

He said, "A single death is a tragedy, a million dead is a statistic."

I just read that American covid fatalities now exceed the combined deaths of those who served in both WWI & WWII. This really does not seem to concern some Americans who continue to say the dangers of covid have been blown out of proportion (I've been told this to my face as well).

9/11 was an American tragedy. All of us were changed by it. We've mourned the dead from that day. Most Americans are respectful of those who perished while performing military duties.

However, there is a disconnect in the psyche of some Americans who will lionize some deaths as honorable or tragic whereas the toll of the pandemic is just the cost of doing business.

Bit random but obviously connected...here's a deep dive into how the whole Ivermectin confusion came about and spread so fast...

David Pakman is one of the best political you tubers out there. I recommend every single person watch his channel instead of grifters on the left and right wing grifters that misinform for money. Pakman is informative, fair and even keel.

He's excellent for condensing the news cycle. He's one of the best interviewers on the platform for sure, I wish he'd do it even more often. Sam Seder, Amy Goodman, and Thom Hartmann are the others I go to for solid news sourcing and quality interviews of authors and academics.

Well, I tested positive for covid today.
I was feeling fatigued last night, and today my nose started running.
I stayed home from work and got an antigen test.
It's positive, will confirm with a PCR tomorrow.
I'm fully vaccinated with Pfizer, since May/June.

So far the symptoms feel quite similar to my 2nd shot.
i feel a bit feverish, but without actually having a fever.
It's not too bad, I just hope it doesn't get too much worse.

My wife tested negative, but my 3 year old is positive.
She definitely got it at school and gave it to me.
All my other contacts went for a test and are negative.
She had a runny nose yesterday, and seemed to be under the weather last weekend, but we didn't think too much of it.
Tomorrow we'll have to tell the school and they'll shut down her class.
Sucks for the other parents.
I can't help wondering if any other parents at the school already know and haven't said anything.
Clearly my kid picked it up from someone.

Sorry to hear that happened despite your best efforts. Unfortunately, the school situation is going to create an ongoing loop between classrooms and home environments.

Does your kid’s school mandate masks?

Here in France they are mandatory from primary school onwards, but my kid is in "maternelle" (equivalent of pre-K) which is free and obligatory here (hooray for socialism!)
She seems to just have the sniffles, which is par for the course the first week of school.
Apparently, for the little ones it's really hard to tell covid-19 from your run of the mill coronavirus, rhinovirus, etc.

Correct. Except for the weird rare cases where it isn't. It's why I think I had it already pre-March 2020. My kids got a mild bug and I got absolutely wrecked. If there's one silver lining of this whole thing it's that kids haven't been impacted as much as you would think.

Hope your experience continues to be mild.

Glad you're not too sick, and hope you and your child get over it, soon.

My boss's boss has an 8 year old who had covid, so he couldn't come to work because of quarantine for 10 days. He's ok, having been vaccinated before, and being luckier than you were. His son did well, so looking forward to hearing back from you that you and your family is all well, too.

My wife and I had fevers and lethargy for 10 days prior to the start of COVID in November 2019. People kept telling us it was probably COVID, but we hadn't travelled or knowingly come in contact with travelers, and nobody knew about COVID at that time. We were both later tested negative for covid. We have both since been vaccinated, and my wife was tested for "spike protein" which was positive (meaning she had a good immune to her vaccine. I received the Flu vaccine on Sunday, and I had a horrible day yesterday (fever and tired), but woke up feeling great today. Even my arm works again after being almost too painful to use for a while - and I didn't even feel the jab. Go figure. But a small price to pay for some protection from the flu, which is still a bad thing to get (remember it killed people and we were all worried about some super strain of the flu coming back, pre-pandemic?)

Although, that doesn't mean there should be no repercussions for their decisions beyond what the virus will do to their body and their families. I would support financial and legal consequences for people who refused to get vaccinated and then caught covid. Especially if their hospitalization were harming others who did get it and suffered health effects because they were displaced by those who didn't get it.

I couldn't tell you what those consequences would amount to but I wouldn't criticize too vigorously even if they were more onerous than I would see fit.

The issue becomes one of how to best allocate and distribute limited medical resources. For example, there was the recent case of a husband, whose wife has cancer, can't get treatment because the only hospital in the area if filled up with COVID patients who got the virus bc they didn't take it seriously. I get his anger.

It's definitely something that shouldn't be ignored. So what are your solutions? I already spoke of my perspective.

I would like to see us build makeshift hospitals for unvaccinated COVID patients. I'm not down with the financial fine scheme you recommended.

We could stock those hospitals with oil of oregano, hydroxychloroquine, ivermectin, and bleach.

Well, I didn't recommend a financial fine, I didn't recommend anything, just what I would support. Financial AND legal.... not financial legal....the 'and' in between made them two different things not a single thing.

I don't know what would be those financial AND legal consequences but I'm not sure a fine is something that can be assessed if they haven't broken any laws.

I'm surprised none of the Governors have tried to utilize MASH styled hospitals like they did in the first few months but most of the worst states for infections are red ones that likely still don't believe covid exists.
If you'd rather see your team fail so you can be right
