An interesting story about the Sixers' problems signing Charles Bassey -- a guy a lot of us liked: https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2021/09/sixers-charles-bassey-remain-at-impasse-in-contract-talks.html
There's a ton of fascinating info in this story, not just about Bassey either.
1. Philly bought the pick they used on Bassey from the Pelicans. From which we learn that R2 picks were available for $$.
2. We could have bought a R2 pick -- either that one or, very likely, another one.
3. The Sixers came into the draft with the #28 pick & the #50 pick. Although they are a much, much better team than the Wizards, they saw talent in R2, even late in the round, they could not let get past them. 2 picks were not enough for them. We on the other hand, traded down our draft capital in order to obtain Aaron Holiday.
4. That's worth clarifying: The Sixers are a younger team than we are. They are also a deeper team than we are. Anyone question that? Didn't think so. Yet, they felt a greater need for young talent than we did. I don't understand that, do you?
5. We picked Corey Kispert, a graduating senior, #15. At #28, the Sixers chose Jaden Springer, a 1 and done player. Let's see who turns into the better pro.
5. We took Isaiah Todd #31. The Sixers took Filip Petrusev #50 & Bassey #53. Now, in principle, the #31 pick is tradable for e.g. #46 & #47. Or for any number of combinations of 3 picks in the last half of R2. Of course it's possible no deals were available -- though plenty were for other teams.
In short, aside from all the other possible ways of doing it which have been mentioned, it does seem clear that we could have come away from the 2021 draft with a ton more talent than we did. In fact, I don't see why to think Isaiah Todd is likely to be a better NBA player than Charles Bassey.
I'm a broken record on this subject, I know. I apologize. But... it drives me crazy to see us miss opportunities to create a tremendous team.

Agreed. I'm a big fan of both Petrusev and Bassey. Them going so late really shows how bigs who aren't great athletes are just not in demand anymore. Still, I think guys who can produce like they do should have some value. It takes some chustzpa (sp?) for a late 2nd rounder to make demands, but it also shows he believes in himself - as he should.
While there's only so many rookies a GM wants in a year, they can always trade down and trade for a future pick. Trading down from 15 to get a 2nd rounder plus a future 1st might have been a smart way to go if they were concerned they'd get too many rookies. There were some nice PG's picked in the 2nd round.

"Chutzpah" is how it's usually transliterated (Yiddish being written in Hebrew letters).

Well this is kind of my point. IMO, that's not the way to think about it. If excellent value opportunities are there, you accumulate the value.
It's not just this draft -- in 2019-20 Philly won over 75% more games than we did! Yet, in the 2020 draft, they added 3 rookies.
OTOH, we had a R2 pick from Chicago & traded down (!) to pick a lesser talent. Why didn't we trade up a couple of spots to take Tillman, then buy another pick in R2.
Ruzious wrote:...Trading down from 15 to get a 2nd rounder plus a future 1st might have been a smart way to go if they were concerned they'd get too many rookies. There were some nice PG's picked in the 2nd round.
Except there's no reason to worry about too many rookies. #15 gets you something like #26, #36, & a couple of low R2 picks. We got Kispert.
That package gives you Quentin Grimes, Miles McBride, Sharife Cooper & Charles Bassey. Or it gives you Jaden Springer, JT Thor (or Neemias Queta), Petrusev & Mamukelashvili (or Jericho Sims). Or... you get the idea.
Thinking "I can't use a lot of rookies" is inexcusable when your record over the last 2 years is what ours has been.

A number of us were high on Tyler Bey in the 2020 draft. He was picked #36 & was a 2-way player last season for the Mavs.
He was just waived. I have to say, I'm surprised he didn't show more.

Yeah me too. Would he be worth a pick up? Who would we discard?payitforward wrote:A number of us were high on Tyler Bey in the 2020 draft. He was picked #36 & was a 2-way player last season for the Mavs.

We have 15 guaranteed contracts. If we simply ate someone's salary to sign him, we'd be in the luxury tax.
We do have an open 2 way slot, of course. We'll add someone there. No reason to imagine it'll be Tyler Bey.

JJ Redick announces retirement, but I got dibs on bets that he'll try to sign with someone after midseason to chase a ring.

Yup, made a similar comment on the Tap thread, I expect to see him this later this season.

I think he takes a media job. His podcast gets good guests and he is solid and insightful as an interviewer. I also expect he doesn't really want to leave his swank digs in NYC. He's all about lifestyle and culture. If the Nets or the Knicks needed him as a late season add for the playoffs, then sure. But hunt down video of his Brooklyn warehouse apartment and then ask if you think he wants to leave all that. He's commonly talking about which five-star restaurant in NYC he went to etc. and what chef he met. If he gets a media job in NYC then he's not leaving.
Found it:

It does look like he's having the time of his life there. Otoh, he knows he'll probably never get another chance to be an NBA player on a team that could win it all. I figure he'd wait till game 50ish, so there won't be too much wear and tear, he'll be fresh for the playoffs, and he'll only be away for 4 months or so.

This is funny, though maybe sad too....
Rosas was viewed as big-time rising star until he went to Minny. Now he'll have trouble finding a next job. If I remember rightly, Ted tried to interview him Spring '19, & he didn't come in.

I kept saying Saddiq was the better Bey, but I won't bring that up. I'm much too modest, humble, and good looking.

Saddiq Bey went #18 & had a nice rookie season -- he played a lot of minutes & posted numbers that overall were just above the level of an average NBA 3. That's terrific. Especially for a guy who came out after 2 years.
But, I don't think he was the biggest success in terms of... I guess it's "pick position vs. rookie productivity." I'd say the top 5 in that regard were:
Kenyon Martin Jr. (by a lot!!)
Xavier Tillman
Saben Lee
Payton Pritchard
Desmond Bane
Still... no question Saddiq Bey looks like quite a good young player. Not as good, don't get me wrong, as you are modest, certainly not as promising as you are humble. Above all no one would say that his basketball skills compare to your handsome mien, etc.

I know we have a glut of forwards, but the Bucks just waived Diakite. I’d love to grab him. Is Cassius on our 15 man? If so, can we waive him?
In Rizzo we trust

Re: Discussing Other Teams' Moves - Part 7
One Simmons trade that might make sense would be to Denver for Jamal Murray. They both are talented players in their prime that are signed long-term. Murray has questions on health coming back from an ACL injury. Simmons has questions of fit with many teams.
Denver might be the best possible fit for Simmons. With the way they run the offense through Jokic and he extends the defense that should open up offensive opportunities for Simmons inside. One the defensive end have a stopper like Simmons would be a huge boost for the Nuggets. With the emergence of Michael Porter Jr, Simmons would be 3rd or 4th option on offense.

I was also positive that Mario Belinelli would be better than Nick Young.
My guy turned out to be the least of the four.
Bye bye Beal.
