Happy Thad Young Eve everyone!

Pretty sure tomorrow is the first day he can be legally traded in any deal after being traded to San Antonio 60 days ago.

I'll say I'm in the camp of we SHOULD do it, but I don't know how much truth there are to the rumors.

I love Thad Young, but at this point I wouldn't make the move. I would wait and watch how we play the first 20 games.

Saric is really important for the chemistry and when he is on he is a very valuable player on the court.

Jalen Smith has shown improvement in the Summer League and so far in the preseason, so he probably is not that far away to help us as a bench player night in and night out.

I make the move because I think Thad Young is a better player than both Saric and Smith. Saric isn't going to contribute this year, and it's unclear if Smith will either. I'd rather have a roster spot going to a guy who will be on the floor every night, can comfortably increase his role in the event of an injury, and has multiple high caliber NBA skills. I also think Young helps us match up better against teams like the Lakers and Clippers, who are likely to be our WCF opponents because he's a lot more switchable than either Smith or Saric.

This. I don't want to make this move. I don't care about Saric, but I don't like the idea of trading our top 10 pick only after a year. Especially to SAS, it'd be just like the Spurs to turn him into an awesome player.

If he turns into an awesome player, but Thad helps us win a championship this season, I think that's worth it, and I don't think anyone would look back regretfully on the move. That said, it would be nice to develop Smith here, but the timeline for his development is very short. If you don't think he can be a rotation player this season, you gotta look into moving him for someone who is.

But why would we play Jalen Smith 50 minutes if it's a done deal just waiting for the deadline?

He does an ACL and they have to take 2 guys with ACLs?

I think that there's a good chance he can be something this season. Maybe not a starter, but he can give us good mins. Besides, we'll need some good, young players here after $arver messes things up with our other guys (hopefully not Ayton).

For the record, that Allen contract is going to be awful.

2 reasons:

1. If the Spurs want to send Smith to a 3rd team, but Phoenix can't find one then they need to showcase him

2. It's better to have Smith play those minutes than McGee or Ayton who are locked into the rotation.

Reading a bit between the lines on this. But I think Ayton is trying to cleverly tell us without telling us, that they're getting close to finalizing the deal on his extension.

I don't think we're trading Jalen.

I think the Suns are interested, but after hearing the way Monty talked about Saric, I don't see it with him. Not sure if there is another way, but I don't think there is barring trading a key piece.

This is how I feel as well. Galloway always played his role well whenever he got minutes.

I’d really like them to bring him back.

See, even with those, we only have the tax in 22-23, even with options...just take off the other cap holds and find cheaper guys. Guaranteed plus options is actually way under the tax most years so we could exercise some of them.

I'd work backwards - How much luxury tax is Sarver willing to pay this era?

$50m?
$100m?

Let's be generous and say $75m over 3 seasons (4 seasons equals repeater tax) which means $25m per season, that equates to roughly being able to go $12m over the cap.

Luxury tax 2022/2023 = 143m + 12m = $155m

Under the Ayton Max, Bridges 100/4 scenario =

Booker 34
Paul 28
Bridges 23
Ayton 29
= $114m

So that's $41m for remaining 11 players

Your last 5 guys are probably being paid no more than $10m.

= $31m for your 6 rotation players.

Which doesn't seem as much as a squeeze as we might have thought, I haven't projected future years though.

Perhaps we're wanting to negotiate the last $2-3m on Ayton and Bridges as it may be the difference in our ability to keep Johnson and Shamet down the road.

He probably only has to pay it in 1 year if we don't guarantee Paul's 3rd year. 22-23 we still have Crowder, Saric, Paul and the two extensions and maybe Shamet.

23-24 we no longer have Crowder, Saric and likely not Paul ($15 million guaranteed). We will have the Cam extension but we should be able to avoid the tax or barely be in it.

24-25 a new Booker contract but no Paul.

This is one reason to develop some young cheap rookie contract players or we will need to be able to get a decent MLE guy when Crowder/Saric are gone.

The #s are all above.

With Shamet and Elfrid on board Galloway doesn't make sense for the team this season.

Randle signed an Exhibit 9 contract, fully non-guaranteed and with few insurances so he probably will not be on the final official roster.

I think that we will have an open roster spot at the start of the season waiting for some solid 3/4 available later via FA or trade.
