76ers Engaged With Nine Known Teams, One 'Mystery' Team On Ben Simmons Trade

The Philadelphia 76ers remain engaged with nine known teams on a trade for Ben Simmons in addition to a 10th "mystery" team that is unclear even to members of Rich Paul.

The Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Portland Trail Blazers, San Antonio Spurs and Toronto Raptors are the nine known teams.

No team has come close to the asking price set by Daryl Morey and the 76ers as they seek a star on the level of Damian Lillard or Bradley Beal.

No conversations held by the 76ers have advanced beyond the very first stage.

The Cavalier sand Wolves have largely made pick-heavy overtures while Philadelphia has countered that they need them to bring specific All-Star caliber stars.

As long as they try to hold out for a Lillard/Beal type superstar Simmons will never be traded. The 76ers need to realize they have the least valuable asset in the trade and there is no way they come out on top of this. Cut your losses and give your team a clean start to the season.

But cutting losses is not how to look at this. Trading Ben is not addition by subtraction (that would be Tobias, and that is a whole other story).

Other teams have to realize that 'buy low' here does not mean two scrubs and a pick. Buying low on Simmons means a starter, a good prospect, a bad contract, and a couple lightly protected picks.

I agree that PHI can't "appear" to win the trade. They aren't bringing back Beal, Lillard or any other name bigger than Simmons'. Teams shipping out players of that caliber are rebuilding and nobody is starting a rebuild with Simmons at this point.

But PHI could win on the court by bringing in 2-3 lesser names that will make them one of the deepest teams in the East. Some of the deals rumored would have been great for PHI. Unfortunately this has turned into an ego thing with Morey. They need to hire Billy Bean as a consultant.

But they turned down Simmons for McCollum

McCollum would be great next to Embiid. As would Brogdon

See, I would rather have Tobias than Simmons. It's not even close. He fits in any NBA lineup. We all know that NBA teams can no longer afford to have more than one non-shooter on the floor at a time. Simmons needs to be surrounded by shooters and that limits PHI's trade partners. I'm sure PHI are put off by the size of Tobias' contract, but that's a PHI problem. Tobias is solid.

McCollum would be great next to Embiid. As would Brogdon

I agree those deals would be great for PHI, but I don't really think either POR or IND should make those trades. Maybe those offers weren't real.

The only "mystery" I see is why any team would trade more than a bag of peanuts and a used sneaker for a player who has the mental facility of a grade-schooler.
