the voice of the Raptors - Matt Devlin has been telling y'all for years that the league belongs to ~6'8+ SFs(+wingspan) with handles!

I was one of the ones who stood up and uttered “noooo” and buried my face in my hands when Scottie’s name was called on draft day. I’ve since prepared, seasoned, and downed my plate of crow.

Incredible poise and feel for the game already. Even when I was sold (mostly by his personality) pre-season, I had expected him to be an unbelievably raw prospect with many glaring flaws to his game. Absolutely love his combination of court vision, inside scoring ability, and especially pleasantly surprised by his midrange and out shooting. Will want a Scottie jersey sooner rather than later.

For reference sake, these are the numbers Vince Carter posted in his first 5 NBA games: 34.5 MIN, 13.2 PPG, 50% FG, 0.00 3PT%, .692 FT%

Barnes: 34.6 MIN, 17.0 PPG, 53.7 FG%, .167 3PT%, 75.0 FT%

I remember thinking that we were on a good path once Vince was drafted. He popped out of the gate.

Barnes is surrounded by a lot more talent than Vince. Same now, this feels like we're on the upswing again after the Tampa turdseason.

Scottie has become must see TV.

Its funny, I think Scottie has SO much room for growth offensively. Right now hes got alot of ZBo in his game, obviously quicker.

I was surprised at how early Nurse has been publicly hammering down that Scottie needs to be aggressive to the basket EVERY time. Like he's been talking about this every day and I'm sure he talks to Scottie about this way more. I think the organization is trying to change Scottie's mentality early to be a scorer first and distributor second as he is eventually going to be come that #1 option superstar surrounded by great #2/#3s.

Like last night's game he was being more aggressive but I think he started off like 1-6. He ended up going 8-17 with 18 pts and 7 assists so Nurse was right. The more aggressive he is, the assists will add up because teams would be paying more attention for him to score. Once he develops a 3pt shot, that 18 pts will be regularly in the 20s.

It will come with rep, film and experience. Scottie's potential is just insane. I wasn't high on him because I did want Suggs but I said he looks like a bigger Andre Igoudala. Based on what I've seen he'll blow pass that comparison with ease. He's such smart player at his age it's rare to find a rookie that's this cerebral. This draft class has been as great as I thought and we haven't seen Cade yet.

So basically, we have all proved to each other why we post on realgm, whilst Masai and Bobby do what they do.

I'm not surprised - everytime he drives he bullies his way to the rim and hes already such a polished finisher. Its a no brainer he needs to do it because it opens up so much on offense.

We have something special with Barnes - frig it feels so good!

Yep yep, I just meant I was surprised at the messaging from Nurse publicly. Started in pre-season in response to how good Scottie is, Nurse tried not to be too complimentary and said he wanted Barnes to look to score more than pass, then after each game in the regular season Nurse still hammers down this critique. Not saying I don't like it, but seems it is a very calculated move from the organization to develop Scottie into a 1A scorer early on, so that it becomes habit. Like after each Barnes game, I don't really have any complaints and then Nurse post-game goes "well I want to see more!" I like that.

Nurse is right. Scottie himself doesn’t know how talented he is scoring wise. If he can expand the range to 3pt and improves his footwork under the basket. I believe he can average 25pts easily.

Scottie's game is where I'd hoped it would be in his second season. I know there will be ups and downs, but it's crazy how good he is already. I always felt we'd see flashes of greatness this season (enough to justify the #4 pick), but not this sort of consistency. I can't remember ever seeing a Raptor rookie have such an off first quarter, and then finish with 18/7/7/2. And he'll clearly become a better shooter!

It's amazing how this draft has totally lived up to expectations so far. With guys like Giddey, Wagner & Duarte playing great, the Jalens likely to really improve significantly, and Kuminga & Cade yet to play, this could be one of the great drafts.

Barnes makes it easy and already looks so advanced for a rookie. Dont think anyone saw this coming (maybe masai/bobby/nurse did)

He has the body which is a huge advatange (just like lebron and giannis)
has the court awareness
has the passing/creativity
great rebounder - something that was underrated pre draft
has the defensive makeup to be a top defender in the league

once he gets comofrtable with his shot, thats a superstar.

Just re-watching the game, I thought one good comparison for Scottie is right here - Pascal. Except he finishes his drives stronger either with a dunk or at least not fading away from contact like Pascal does. Last night Scottie made a strong drive on Turner, kept the ball in one hand all the way, but leaned into Turner as he laid it off the glass. Pascal can make the same move but would have leaned way to the right, away from Turner, and tried a more difficult angle off the glass. Scottie also makes spin moves in the post, like against Sabonis last night, and finishes them stronger than Pascal.

I'm so excited still about Pascal coming back, but I'm thinking Scottie may be a better Pascal.
There goes my hero. Watch him as he goes.

As high as I've been on OG, Barnes is a great example of a prospect on a whole other tier -

Image

This is their Rookie stats at the same age. Obviously OG didn't get the same minutes/opportunity but there is no chance he would've been as successful that early in his career. It's only been these last two years that OG has developed a more comfortable handle while Barnes' practically starting off from that point.

I don't believe Barnes will be a better wing defender than OG but will be a more versatile defender when he hits his prime.

Man, I remember hoping he'll be good in like 3 years. He's already showing his potential 5 games in.
Still lots of room to grow and now I really can't wait to see what he's like in 3 years.
