I think you are right. The issues that Kanter has been talking about are significantly bigger than helping to building a school (as nice as that is). And I am sure that LeBron does do good things through his foundation. But issues like Hong Knog, the Uyghurs, Tibetans and other oppressed minorities are not sexy causes - and taking on the Turkish or Chinese governments is a whole 'nother level of activism. The victims of these government activities often get killed. The people who speak out against these governments often "disappear" (WHERE IS PENG SHUAI?). Just because Enes Kanter is not as famous as LeBron James doesn't mean that his voice has no power. It has more power than my voice has. He is willing to risk what he does have - which is a decent life making a fair amount of money to PLAY BASKETBALL - to speak out about these things. He has my respect for that.

OK. Back to basketball.

Talking. That is what Kanter did. Lebron did the doing.

That is true on the court and off the court.

Using one's voice to shine a light on the potentially murderous activities of autocratic regimes against persecuted minorities is the kind of stuff that gets activists killed.

This is why politics and social issues should NEVER be on the GB.

He lives in the USA. Safe and sound. You act like he is an activist in Burma or something. What happened to Peng Shuai, THAT is brave.

A bit disappointed in Enes. Theres a lot of ways he could have gotten that message across that strongly without going at the man like that.
There's a lot of nuance around this situation... not everyone has the same type of courage that Enes has, nor should they be expected to be. Also, not all situations are the same, especially when we consider things like safety.

ngl tho man its gotten my interest. I'm glad someone's finally speaking about the situation itself. I'm disappointed in the way its being packaged.

how is it being disappointing when china is taking over the world forcefully?
he knows if he keeps blind eye for another decade, humanity will fall as evidenced by chinas threat of trade war. most americans take their freedom for granted too much they dont deserve the privilege they are getting when kanter is literally the final bastion of hope. enes is risking his life but hes risking either way if he remains silent he will get oppressed eventually. hes already lost his home country once.

Are you mentally ill? There is nothing that Kanter said that the world doesn't know about. The world isn't doing anything not because they needed a Kanter, but because China is an economic juggernaut. You act like Kanter just found a new dimension in reality.

I wonder which NBA player is going to call out the US military for the recently revealed atrocity in Syria where they dropped a 500 lb. bomb on women and children, finished off the survivors with a 1000 lb. bomb and then bulldozed their corpses into the dirt?

Agreed, on both points.

I will say this though.... I FULLY believe there are people at nike who are giving LBJ the most articulate propaganda of how this is a two sided issue and that the nazi camps in china might not even be a real thing, so I get why he seems to stay out of it.

May I present this point in a different way... i.e., of having two choices?

1) Either Lebron is being fed propaganda... and isn't "educated enough about the situation" himself. In which case, Laura Ingraham's "shut up and dribble" comments were very apt, right?

2) Or Lebron knows exactly what is going on and is a shill pretending to care about social issues... like the many we see on news networks or coming out of Hollywood, especially those who like using these phrases more often than others do, "you aren't educated enough about the situation" and "let me educate you about". If you start paying attention to who thinks and says things like that more often, you might see the pattern of how myopic and personally oriented their views are too. :P

All a matter of perspective.

Anti-China: Puts attention on China and its policies.

Pro-China: Emboldening. Now there's a narrative of China being a puppet master, and nobody with "power" will say nor do anything to stop it.

Doubt China cares either way.

Who did they bomb, which country did they wreck in the last 30, 40 years

You may want to watch this video which shows what was originally China... and all of the land/countries they have forcefully taken over and occupy today. They now present all these lands as always being part of China, cutting them out from the maps of other countries that are used in education, on the internet, and seen in world-wide news programs. They even sponsor historians to re-write history and present their false historical information on international TV. History is being re-written by those who control the media.

Why should I listen guys from India talking about China, all I know that China kicked their ass in a hand to hand combat at the border , so they are sour because of that. Show me specific country which they have bombed, destroyed and occupied in the last 30 years .

Well, for one, because the Indian and Chinese civilizations have existed for thousands of years and know a lot about each other. Both civilizations were advanced enough to document their histories for many centuries... including information about their controlled territories and rulers/dynasties/kingdoms. The current and older Indian versions of historical documentation match with the older Chinese versions... yet the new Chinese versions do not match their own older versions... and don't even match their own Great Wall Of China! Therefore, logic dictates that you should not ignore it, right? This is something that needs to be known globally.

As for a list of countries that have been occupied by China and people displaced, oppressed or killed: Tibet, Turkestan, Southern Mongolia, Yunnan, and Manchuria are the primary ones.

Two of those countries appear to have made peace with being absorbed into China (Manchuria and Yunnan). They have more in common with the Chinese race than people from the other three countries. While I'm not sure where Southern Mongolians stand... Tibet and Turkestan have always opposed being part of and being ruled by China.

Please point to me a specific country that they totally occupied, bombed and destroyed , and not some province that fell under the control of China, provinces that two countries were bickering about through the centuries.

They care, they banned Celtics game in China.

Go check Kanter's twitter, he did not call out LeBron only.

US has been drone bombing for years. They bombed Iraq back to the stone ages as people were cheering the war on. They've bombing Yemen for more than a decade.

Having state controlled media, banning something is a minor nuisance. Anything and everything will be twisted to fit the narrative to its population. "The world wants China to fail, but China is too strong to be stopped."

IMO, those on the outside can make as much noise as they want. As of right now, it's too lucrative to do business in China. If the general population within China isn't made to care, nothing will change.

1) Two wrongs do not make a right.

2) Wrongs done by A to B cannot be used to justify a wrong done by C to D.

3) Past wrongs where attempts have been been made to right the wrong cannot be used to justify current wrongs that continue or past wrongs where attempts have not been made to correct anything.

Can we agree on these three?

By the way, I think what is going on Yemen is terrible too. You may like this article, which explains what that war is about very well.

Then point anything close to Iraq,Libya,Syria,Yemen etc. that China have done to other countries. You can't because they never done it .

It's almost morning here in Europe so im a bit tired but im not justifying anything It's all horrible. My point was majority of people dont really care. Either they dont care or they dont have the information at hand. Which i have a hard time believing with how easy information is to get nowadays. I'll chalk it up to people being willfully ignorant.

But yes i agree with your statement. Im not really sure in regards to what since i haven't been reading all the comments but yes whataboutism i dont like.
