Rockets Considering Future Of Stephen Silas As Head Coach

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Nov 25, 2021 3:47 am

The Houston Rockets are weighing the future of Stephen Silas as head coach amid a 15-game losing streak that was broken on Wednesday.

There were no playoff expectations as the Rockets continue with their rebuild. Rafael Stone directed Silas and his coaching staff to develop and feature Houston's younger prospects such as Kevin Porter Jr. and Jalen Green.

The Rockets hired Silas while the franchise still hoped to convince James Harden to remain with the franchise.

"They put him in a tough position," said one assistant general manager. "[Silas] is genuinely one of the nicest people in the NBA. He actually cares about people. To put him with a bunch of really young dudes who probably don't care about anything but their numbers and playing time, he's just not the right fit."

John Lucas would be the likely choice as interim head coach should Silas be dismissed.

I don't agree with the conclusion of that assistant general manager.

You want coaches who care about people to lead young players. Young people are sensitive and they appreciate that. That is exactly how you want to grow young people up. It gives them the best chance to be great without things getting in the way. Emotional problems are what prevent people from achieving their potential.

The only problem would be does Silas want to be somewhere else. But I don't see Silas as a problem based on this information at all.

I don't understand. HOU has Wall sitting on the sidelines because they are afraid they might win a couple... So are they mad because Silas lost 15 games or are they mad because he won two?

Yeah. I agree with all these reactions. He seems like a good mentor and the franchise isn't giving him much to work with. NBA is getting a bit hard to root for. Do better.

There is this young savant of a coach, a real genius, think the Rockets need to jump on him before another team snatches him up. Goes by Luke Walton.

NBA is about results and the record isn't good enough. He's coached almost 100 games and has about a .200 winning percentage. Other coaches have been given WAY less of a chance and been fired for far more questionable reasons.

Is the franchise trying to win, though?
Because if they are, playing with an actual point guard might be advisable.

The Rockets' owner is a Trump sycophant and will probably use this losing, which isn't Silas's fault, as the excuse to bring in a caucasian head coach. No one wants to play for this owner. Honestly, he'd probably be doing Silas a favor. Everyone knows it's not his fault anyhow.

Is he not playing the young guys? How much development does the front office expect in 18 games?

Morrey poured gasoline on the team and organization and light a match on the way out of the door.

With nothing left but rubbles, the team needed and hired a cheap coach is stupid and eager enough to take the job. Very similar to Luke Walton

but I am curious to hear thoughts on the matter as to why he got the job.

For the record, I am not sure that a prime Pat Riley could have gotten much out of this team. Especially once Harden abandoned ship

Silas certainly wasn't put in position to succeed but looks like he's underwhelmed even those expectations.

People shouldn't assume he got the job because he's black, nor should they assume that he's let go because he's black (should he be eventually let go, which in coaching is almost always just a matter of time regardless of who you are).

Most new head coaches will be failures, especially in their first stop. If someone wants to do a robust study of coaching success by race that accounts for talent / situation, I'd be interested to read it, but otherwise, I'm going assume that there will be a similar level of success regardless of race and no one should leap to racial preference as a reason for hiring or racism as a reason for firing unless there is some pretty significant evidence to reach that conclusion.

Tell a man he can't play his best player than fire him for losing lol. And whats the point? So you can fire the next coach after 4 years?

It doesn’t sound like he would be let go specifically because of the team record.

What if regardless of the teams record, the organization doesn’t feel like he’s the right guy to develop these young players into better players?
