This has nothing to do with being smarter. They relying on the vets on offense and due to Banton and Flynn not being or ready or simply not being good they are trying out Barnes at PG where he won't succeed and turn the ball over.

They want to win games ultimately.

It has everything to do with being smarter. The guys who think Scottie is being developed perfectly know way more about basketball than we do. This team knows what they are doing.

People forget that Scottie is averaging 15/8/3.5/1/1 on good percentages. He's doing fine. Much better than expected.

He was billed as a point forward coming into the league, what role did you want from him, iso go to scorer?? That was never ever role, never has been. You should be excited that he's even shown he has some offensive iso capabilities

How Barnes is being used right now isn't exactly rocket science.

Nick Nurse is coaching to win basketball games. Your vets want to win, you have 4 shot happy players in the starting lineup who are also talented shotmakers for the most part.

And then on the other side of the coin you don't have a backup PG who is reliable and Nurse is trying to combat this in different ways. He is trying to use Barnes here to make up for deficiencies on the roster. To win basketball games.

As far as the stats go, they will plummet very, very quickly. His scoring will go down, his turnovers will go up.

I actually rewatched the game on Synergy this morning which allows to only watch Scottie's mins. He got 6 empty corner isolations (2 against each Wesley Matthews, Mamu and Nwora) that he just didn't attack. Fred even told him to go and he again botch the play at the end of the 3rd.
I think he's hurt right now and not confident with his movements. This is something to keep an eye on to see his level aggression the next few games against good teams.

It looks like his knee is really affecting him the last couple games. He's visibility limping up and down the court and looks like he's trying to protect it when fighting through screens defensively.

He is definitely injured. Hand, knee and now hip. The question is why is he playing?

Should just rest him for the all star break, don’t even send him to the rookie game lol.

My man has had tape around his thumb for like 2 months now.

Definitely not running an offense or playing PG. What's going to happen is people will complain about his turnovers and his play in every game thread going forward and I wouldn't be shocked if some people at the end of the year will wish Toronto had drafted Giddey or Wagner.

The turnovers that Scottie had last night weren't a result of him playing point guard. They were just bad decisions. Scottie is more than capable of playing minutes at point guard and this experience will only make him a better player.

Given how cautious our team is with injuries, if Scottie was injured he would definitely not be out there.

yeah, what's going on there? why do you wear a tape for 2 month unless the injury is a lot worse than anticipated?

It's not like we use or need him much with a full roster anyway. I say, let him get healthy and come back when someone else is out again. He has way too many issues to keep playing with that.

Probably the type of injury where it won’t fully heal until it has surgery but not significant enough to make him get it during the season.

You’re not watching the raptors play if you think they have the luxury of sitting him.

No, he can't play the position. He is not a natural point guard. Never has been, never will be.

And he wouldn't play point guard if we had a good backup point guard. It's a result of roster deficiencies. He will struggle in that role and his turnovers will rise significantly.

He was being exposed to that same issue in college as well and struggled mightily in some games. Because his college team did not have a natural point guard and we have the issue when FVV sits.

And the rest of the time on the court he is a passive 5th option.

So really, you can cite his stats right now but they will go way down across the board especially in scoring.

I wouldn't be shocked. He isn't featured and is being exposed into a situation he won't succeed in.

And if you read the thread, there already have been users saying Wagner is not far behind him in general and Giddey is far ahead of everyone else in court vision.

So let an injured Barnes struggle in the position he is put in as the 5th option for the rest of the season and these takes will be common.

They absolutely should have the luxury of sitting an injured Barnes who is taking 6-7 shots per game and is 6th in usage behind Booshay. Not that an injured player is very effective anyway.

it wasn't a knee issue but he got hit in the hip in the first quarter and he became less aggressive after that. He was labouring for sure, but it didn't look serious to me.

Scottie Barnes is the exact type of player who would lock down Derozan if we were to meet the Bulls in the playoffs

They need to scale his minutes down to 30-32.

You’re supposed to turn the ball over when trying to create plays for others. It’s way too early to say he won’t succeed as a primary playmaker he already has the gift of seeing plays others can’t and is willing to take risks.

No doubt the raptors are really good at developing guys and Scottie will be good in the long run.
Tonight was just a bad game for him but I also worry that he will revert back to not shooting and he won’t get guarded at all. Bucks started doing that in the second half.

He will definitely revert back to that due to not being involved/being the 5th option and out of rhythm and the few shots he will take, he will miss. He will look a lot like Kyle Anderson

Did you miss derozans rookie year where he was behind vets so he was relegated to being the 5th option whenever he was on the floor. He didn’t end up being some passive player he actually developed into a career 20 ppg scorer. Eventually pascal and possible fvv/og will be moved and Barnes will have the team for himself have some patience.

Yes, but running an offense/playing PG and just creating for others are different circumstances. Barnes can't run an offense and isn't natural doing it. But he can make plays for others if you give him the ball in the half court and give him the option to either attack make a pass to an open cutter or shooter.

Return to Toronto Raptors
