Harder to make trades with three playoff teams, all of them wanting to avoid salary, but if my numbers are right, this one is salary neutral within $100,000. Every player is an expiring except Beasley and Richardson (2 years). My goal was also to improve rotations without touching any starters.


BOS GIVES:: Richardson, Juancho
BOS GETS: Beasley, Layman, DEN 2022 2nd

ATL GIVES: Dieng, Lou Williams, Solomon Hill (out), ATL 2023 2nd
ATL GETS: Okogie, Juancho

MIN GIVES: Beasley, Okogie, Layman and DEN 2022 2nd
MIN GETS: Richardson, Dieng, Lou Williams, Solomon Hill (out), ATL 2023 2nd


Why for BOS? The Celtics are looking for three point shooting to spread the floor. I don’t know how they feel about Josh Richardson since he is hitting 40% this season, but on only 3.5 (likely easier) attempts a game, and is an average shooter for his career (36%). Beasley is only shooting 34% this season so far, but on 8.8 attempts a game, and is a 38% career shooter. Moving Richardson provides minutes for Beasley. I see the two as comparable players, but I understand how people could be way down on Beasley. The deal is salary neutral this year - Beasley is a little more expensive next year, so I included the 2nd rounder. BOS could absorb both MIN players in two of their exceptions (did they use the Fournier one yet?), and create two new exceptions with a fresh one year clock.

Why for ATL? The Hawks are 26th in defense, and rumored to be looking for help there. Josh Okogie is an excellent one-way defender, who would improve the Hawks struggling defense. His energy is contagious, maybe moreso going home to Georgia. Dieng will probably get many DNP-CD’s with Okongwu back. The deal is salary neutral, and the Hawks get a roster spot by dumping Hill, who’s out for the season.

Why for MIN? Josh Richardson has been all over the board since he was so promising back in MIA. I’m a little worried for MIN to trade shooting, since they lead the NBA in 3PA and are near the bottom in 3P%. However, Josh Richardson is a better defender than Beasley, and I think he provides a better balance to find Jaylen Nowell some minutes. Josh R also makes moving Josh O easier. I’m happy to send Okogie home to perhaps advance his career, after all the hard work he’s given MIN. Dieng provides a bench big with size, has experience with KAT, and it’d be nice to get him back to the playoffs in MIN. No real use for Lou Williams, but during the playoffs ..you never know. The Wolves have the extra roster spot to do a 3-for-4 and buy out Hill. They also turn a 2022 2nd (they have three) into a 2023.

I hadn’t thought about that, but would he? MIN is a game under .500, tied for 8th in the West, and ATL is four games under, in the 12th spot in the East.

I guess I don’t have a problem buying him out, but I imagine if MIN is helping him go where he wants, that he’d give up a little something, where MIN and his new team combine to give him his full salary, and MIN gets to slide a little farther under the luxury threshold with the set off.

Lou was going to retire right? But getting $5M and being in Atlanta talked him into one more year. I think if Minnesota said we will set you free he might agree and just retire. Or maybe consider joining an LA team if they want him. I don't have him agreeing to give up money. But he might well play ball.

I just don't know that Okogie does enough for Atlanta to go to this much trouble. Why not just Hill/2nd for Okogie? Then if Boston wants to swap Richardson for Beasley they can do that on the side. I like that idea btw, especially since Boston resets a TPE in addition to bringing in a bit more offensive punch. Minny gets a quality vet who fits nicely for them.

MIN would likely jump at that, getting a 2nd, and adding about $1.7 more wiggle room to their 0.87 mil under the lux. Unfortunately, ATL is only about $1.87 mil under the lux, so the deal would virtually remove all their wiggle room.

The other issue is that MIN can’t legally reacquire Juancho, so if the BOS side works, they need a third team. And the addition of Richardson, who is a better defender than Beasley, makes Okogie more expendable.

Btw, if Lou Williams wanted to go to warmer climes, how about a follow up trade with the Lakers for Bazemore, DeAndre Jordan and a future 2nd? LAL is reportedly trying to move them, and they have three extra 2nds, plus all their own.

The deal is salary neutral, Williams could be handy in the playoffs to take offensive pressure off LeBron, and LAL gets the extra roster spot they seem to want. After MIN waives the injured Hill, they have a roster spot to do a two for one - and waive them if they choose.
