Bob Cousy not a big fan of this Celtics team

Post#1 » by Celts17Pride » Fri Jan 7, 2022 8:00 pm

Read on Twitter

If it makes you feel better, Bob Cousy sees the same things you see.

“There’s something wrong,” the Cooz said after watching a recent Celtic debacle. “It’s just schoolyard. Run up and down and take the first shot that shows. There doesn’t seem to be intelligent direction.

“I think a stabilizing piece is missing. They usually [expletive] it up in the fourth quarter when you need to be paying attention to business.

“I hate to bring it back to a point guard but … you don’t have that control. When we got a lead of 6-8 points, that was when I would take it home. I just would not allow us to lose the lead.

“From 1957-63, I remember one game when I let it get away and I took full responsibility. It was against Syracuse at the Providence Arena and we had a lead of 6 or 8 points and we blew it and I feel bad to this day about it.

“Good, solid point guards are difficult to come by. They had one in Kyrie [Irving], but he was a head case. They potentially had one in Kemba [Walker], although Kemba was a shooting guard more than a point guard. You need a penetrating point guard at that point who is a threat and then he passes off to the Tatums and the Browns.

“I love Marcus Smart, but I don’t love him as a point guard. He thinks he’s the best point guard; he’s not, but he’s still a positive factor.

“Right now, at crunch time in the fourth quarter, they’re giving it to Brown and Tatum to create for themselves and 70 percent of the time they do, but they don’t have the creating skills that a clever point guard would have, so they [expletive] it up.

“So we’re in last place in fourth-quarter performance. Tatum and Brown have great skills, up to a point, but not necessarily those of a point guard.

“They should be a lot better than they are. It doesn’t look like we’re going to be hanging banner No. 18 any time soon.”

Saying it only the way one of the greatest players of all time could. Agree completely with Cooz.

Leave it to the Cooz to hit the nail on the head. I loved him as a player and loved him as a Celtics color man. Many of you didn't get to hear him in the latter role. I thought his analysis was the sharpest and most honest I've ever heard. He bled green like Tommy but he was not a cheerleader and not afraid to call out bad play when he saw it. We still love ya, Cooz!

Gorman, Cooz and Tommy trio was gold. I was so disappointed when they ended the Cooz's contract for 12 or so games he would call at the end.

Well said by Cousy.
Can't argue with it. Smart is NOT a PG. He's a Combo, who should come off the Bench.

TBH, I'd feel better with Pritchard Starting, right now. At least he can shoot.
Schröder, eh. He holds the ball waaay too long.

Celtics need a major upgrade at point guard and that player is NOT on the roster right now. Smart is a high level 6th man.

Right. We need to do something like Trade Dennis & Juancho, for a Starter Quality PG. All while staying under the Tax.

A player like Chris Paul would instantly take this team to atop the conference like he did with Phoenix, who struggled the same way Boston is prior to him getting there.

Not many point guards available who can both create and shoot. Brad will definitely need to work some magic to conjure up one for us. Any suggestions?

Big talk from a guy who played in a 6 team league full of part-timers. Dennis Schroder playing left-handed would be a perennial MVP if he played in Cousy's time.

I feel like Bob Cousy succinctly and precisely said what I’ve been trying to articulate or have been feeling in my gut. We need a legit PG who can penetrate, shoot, score and get the best out of Tatum and JB. Expecting them to get the best out of each other is just not working.

Probably one of the worst take i’ve seen in a while on this board.

Not just a pg, but a new coach as well. How could you have Dennis and Marcus inside, while having Tatum bring the ball up, while creating for himself.

The problem you have with his analysis is that he didn't travel forward in time and test his skills against Dennis Schroder when he was playing?

Pretty decent suggestion in terms of someone who's potentially gettable. Our trade asset pool is kinda feast (trade Brown) or famine though.
But he's expiring, I think?

Meh. Cousy thinks they need a player just like Cousy.
