Rubio + non-scoring championship elite roleplayers
In 2022, how far would a team get consisting of one quality distributor like Ricky Rubio plus an extremely scoring-limited roster full of championship caliber roleplayers?
So something like this:
2019 Ricky Rubio / 1997 Ron Harper / 2001 Derek Fisher
2014 Danny Green / 2003 Bruce Bowen / 2021 Pat Connaughton
2008 Shane Battier / 2006 James Posey / 2001 Rick Fox
2002 Robert Horry / 2014 Boris Diaw
2020 Dwight Howard / 2010 Kendrick Perkins / 2017 Tristan Thompson

Re: Rubio + non-scoring championship elite roleplayers
That's just a worse version of the 09 Magic haha. Much worse offence on account of less playmaking and shot creation, and worse defence as well imo, as the difference between 09 Dwight and 2020 Dwight is too much to make up for the improved defence from 1-4. Could be a solid team in the regular season, but their offensive resilience is basically non-existent, so would likely be a first round exit.
You said to me “I will give you scissor seven fine quality animation".
You left then but you put flat mediums which were not good before my scissor seven".
What do you take me for, that you treat somebody like me with such contempt?

they may get a good record, a mid tier seeding then lose in the first round
in a worse case scenario they may also mot make the playoffs

This team has no ability to score, if I take the usage of the first guy listed I get 78.6%. It will grade out to be a great defensive team, probably top couple in the league, but it would by far the worst offense. They probably lose in the play-in games.

I'm gonna say play-in at best, probably out of the playoffs

I thought this thread was going to be about how Rubio himself is a great non-scoring elite role player

There's definitely some elasticity in their usage. For instance, 2002 Horry only had 12.8% usage but that was a function of his role on a team with two ultra-high usage scorers in Shaq/Kobe. Horry's first five seasons in the league he averaged 16.4% usage, and in 2002 he was only 32 (with six seasons still to go in his career) so it stands to reason he would have been capable of bumping his usage up a little. The same story with several other guys, including Battier, Horry, Posey and Harper.
Fisher presents perhaps perhaps the best case on this roster for the elasticity of usage. When GS brought him over after the end of Shaq/Kobe, they gave him a comparatively huge offensive role. His 15.4% usage in 2002 ballooned to 20.2% in 2006, with no drop-off in efficiency (.534 TS in 2002 vs .536 in 2006).
Of course all of these usages are on rosters where there was a primary scorer to focus defensive attention. How well this roster would have been able to generate open looks without a creative scorer is the big question to me, but they unquestionably have the requisite BBIQ, ball rotation skill and spot up shooting ability.

2005 Tayshaun Prince/2008 Shane Battier
1992 Horance Grant/1996 Horry
2014 Joakim Noah/2013 Serge Ibaka
How about a team full of super role players at their peak?

Harper before he went to Chicago (and before his knee injuries) was a primary scorer for Cleveland. Howard was a big scorer in Orlando. Battier was the primary scorer at Duke before he became a pro. Most of these guys were probably much bigger scorers at some point in their lives so maybe the mindset comes back.

Swap Rubio for Luka and this team makes a deep playoff run. Add an elite screener+roller like Ayton and they may win it all.

Maybe could get 45-50 Ws... Don't see them going far in the playoffs.

That's a 60 win team that could beat almost anyone in the playoffs. The ability level of every player in the rotation is insanely high and they'd be a candidate for GOAT defensive team. Better defensively than the 2004 Pistons or 2008 Celtics. If they could just swap one starter [Iggy] for one quality creative scorer of equal overall ability level, I'd take them as title favorites in an average season.

I'd pump the brakes there a bit. There is no one on that roster who you can comfortably\confidently ask to "go get me a bucket", let along having two or more for when playoff defenses tighten up.
Well at least we're not Detroit!

Yep. Iso-ball isn't efficient, but there's something to be said about having a guy on your roster who can create his own shot when the possession isn't going smoothly, and the clock is running down.
