Will the bank shot be gone forever? Why can't players try banking in threes?
Back in the day the bank shot used to be a money shot but nowadays I see it very rarely. I think Westbrook is the only player that still tries for the bank shot. Once he is gone will the bank shot be gone forever?
Why can't somebody perfect the bank shot from the three point line? Bank shots from the elbow are technically easier than a regular jumpshot, I'm surprised that no one has tried adding it to their repertoire yet.

Have you ever played basketball and tried to bank a three? It's far more difficult and completely different mechanics and ball trajectory than from the elbow. Obviously the easiest shot to bank is the layup, it gets more difficult from the elbow, and far more difficult from the three or greater distances.

OP, have you tried to shoot a bank 3 before? You have to put in even more strength than usual to get the ball that far. Banking in 3''s just doesn't make sense physically.
Edit: What guy above me said haha.
I do love a nice mid range bank, but as we know...analytics says don't take that shot anymore.

Bank a shot a three?
This is why it’s hard to take a few of the comments and insights here seriously because some of you haven’t even played ball competitively

I didn't know the NBA was removing the backboards. Typical Adam Silver move

We can't really be certain he's trying for the bank shot.

Re: Will the bank shot be gone forever? Why can't players try banking in threes?
1) Players still bank shots
2) Banking three's is unnecessary, why bank a three when you can just shoot straight and hit a higher percentage?
3) There's a basketball three point shooting game called 7up, we played with a variation that put two points up for bank shots. I liked the bank shot a lot and worked on it a lot from mid-range (though I realize that I have actually stopped using it with any frequency). For some reason I also decided to work on three point bank shots (set shooting, not my regular jumpshot). I could hit about the same percentage on banked three's from the wings, and could even hit them from close to the corner's. Here's the thing, that was at leisure pace shooting set shot. At game speed, the percentages become very different and shooting a bank three deliberately just becomes illogical.
Now, if you have some data showing effective game speed bank shots from range by someone, then cool, if not, I would suggest just hitting the court to shoot and see how it goes. Even though I learned to do it well, I know guys who were very good shooters, better than me who could not and were saying "how are you doing that". So go try it out and then you might realize why it isn't something players spend time on.

A step back three is a regular three. A bank shot three is not.

essentially because the aiming is more complex
you have to aim to a specific part of the backboard in a way that it bounces in a good angle to the hoop
with aiming to the rim you have less stuff to worry about and is easier to use the rim as visual reference
in shorter shots in a diagonal angle (the classic Bank shot) however the angle is relatively easy to see and hit making it a viable option .

A step back three requires movement before immediately shooting so it is theoretically difficult, the difference is all the great 3 point shooters have had to add it to their game to get space.
You could say the great shooters could bank a three, but unless you are banking a 3 at a higher % than a normal 3 point shot its' pointless. Meanwhile mastering the step back move like a James Harden or something, has immediate returns in the NBA.

Viable angle for bank shots get smaller as you go out further. And with a bank shot you gotta shoot with more arch, which is possible with mid range but what are you gonna do with a 3, you'd have to literally shoot higher than Derek fisher and try to hit a spot that's as big as the actual basket at that point.
screw these absolute garbage refs

This is exactly what I think, which makes me wonder why the bank shot was a thing in the first place.

I played with a guy who banked threes. But players today are buried so deep in the corners they can't bank the 3 from there.
And a banked 3 from the 45 or top feels like a fluke.

It's a good shot from certain distance and angles, just like any other shot.
