I think its going to be Smart, Schroder and a sweetner for Conley. That's the deal that makes the most sense for both teams.

I wouldn't do it either. But Bojan and Ingles are also on the wrong side of 30. Now if its Donovan Mitchell for Jaylen Brown, I'm ok with it, but I'm not a huge fan of Mitchell or his contract. Too small, plus he only shoots 34% from beyond the arc. He's not a great passer either.

Mitchell is arguably the best player in Utah, arguably. I'd be shocked if they moved on from their #1 scoring option.

Got to say a deal that involves swapping Smart for Jalen Brunson probably makes sense for both teams. Really like both guys and can see where DAL would like the cost certainty and Boston would like the offensive upside.

Isn't Brunson rumored to be looking for 80/4 yrs? Mavs also top 4 in defense. Not sure how much use they'd have for Smart when Kidd seems to have righted the ship there. Brunson's a key part of their success past couple of seasons.

Those nine players are all highly capably of filling key roles on a championship team in support of the right #1 and coach. Put that team with Jimmy friggin’ Butler, and you’d be in the top 3 in the East this year.

One of the reasons we seem to need a PG is evident every time Pritchard is on the floor with Tatum. Instead of Pritchard being an asset who can handle the ball and spot up for 3 on the swing and doubles, Tatum is constantly calling for the ball once it’s across the half court. This turns Pritchard into a spot up shooter and the possession into dribble-dribble-stand-around-contested shot.

This has been apparent since the Heat series in the bubble. That series exposed the contrast between an offense that moves the ball and one that relies on isolation. The silver lining of that series was that it should have been a great demonstration that by tweaking play style, the Cs would have been in the finals. Instead, the Cs came out last year and dribbled the air out of the ball.

I’ll admit I blamed it on Brad for not holding his players accountable (which he didn’t). I liked what Ime said immediately after his press conference about ball movement and accountability. It appears that making it happen and talking about it are two very different things.

It’s Tatum. And then it’s Ime. But, largely, it’s
Tatum.

To me, this is the critical juncture in the future of this franchise. Trade Tatum for huge assets and the Celtics would find their outcome this year will be roughly the same (possibly better with the right deal) and that the championship foundation is stronger.

And while I think it should happen at the deadline because this year is a gettable championship for a number of teams and there theoretically is a great opportunity to extract value in a manner that is big for the Cs and puts Tatum on a better path to success, it likely would need to happen in the off-season once extension trade prohibitions expire.

Absolutely not.

Tatum's not the #1 guy on a contender yet, but that supporting cast isn't a championship caliber team for anyone else in this league right now.

You’ll notice I didn’t say that this supporting cast in total is a championship-level supporting cast with the right #1. I said that these nine players are all capable of filling supporting roles on a championship team. That’s the key word here - “roles”. Tatum’s game doesn’t provide for roles unless it is offensive rebounding.

Tatum has had 2+ years to show progress on what it means to improve as a #1 option. Instead of figuring out how to play in a manner that improves the performance of those around him, he has taken the opposite track. He’s a better scorer than he was 2 years ago, no doubt. Has he learned how to play off the ball? Has he learned how to put his teammates in a position to succeed? Has he shifted his focus from himself to the team? X-X-X

There’s a difference between value in the trade market and value on the floor. There are several contenders who would love to have Horford as a big off the bench. Same for Schroder as a change of pace scorer. Same for Richardson as a bench wing. Grant clearly has value.

As for Pritchard and Romeo, they all can both play roles. The problem is that Tatum doesn’t make those around him better. In several cases, he makes them worse. He clearly makes Pritchard worse by taking the ball out of his hands when he’s in.
