I see why you think that way, I just disagree. Between our young guys getting paid in the near future and concerns that KAT might leave soon if we don’t climb high enough fast enough, I think at least one big trade is mandatory. Getting a 20/10 big would take a lot of pressure off of KAT and fix our rebounding problems, (we are one of the worst defensive rebounding teams in the league.) Moreover, given the volume of 3s we take, having another big who can shoot the 3 and defend the paint when KAT is high walling is essential. Turner is one guy who fits that bill (though his rebounding is concerning,) my personal preference is either Christian Wood or Julius Randle. But there are other interesting bigs who certainly help.
I see your obsession with oversized frontcourt, I just disagree. Let's say we have 100 USD to spend, you want to spend 100 USD to buy a second big such as Wood or Randle. And bring size. However, I don't see how high volume shooting big can really improve our offense without taking shots from Towns-Edwards-DLo trio. And to be honest neither Wood nor Randle are good shooters, high volume yes. But I would be interested in bringing here Ben Simmons, because all his strengths compliment our core well: he can pass, he can rebound, he can defend and finish at rim. Vando proved that we can be elite offense with one non shooter. However, I wouldn't spend all 100 USD on Simmons. I think we can bring defensive minded backup big for 20 USD (Theis), get a PoA defender for 50 USD (Melton, D.White) and a backup power forward for 30 USD (Brandon Clarke, Nance Jr, RoCo). These moves would give us a lot of depth and flexibility.
1. When KAT is out we are bottom 5 team in the west. If we don’t add another capable big this is likely to remain the case for years to come.
2. We are near the bottom in defensive rebounding. That is a recipe for disaster. Look at the last game. We got killed in 2nd chance points and had they played any real defense the Nets probably beat us.
3. Simmons cannot play with V8, and moving V8 to the bench will exacerbate our rebounding issues. Also Simmons hasn’t played or practiced since the playoffs last year, he will be out of shape. Not to mention the mental health issues and long term bad contract. V8 costs roughly 4.5 mil per year compared to a max Simmons.
4. Without another big our defensive scheme will fail. Since January 3rd we have been 17th in defense. We give up open corner 3s to everyone because our scheme has a serious flaw. Best way to fix that flaw is a big man down low.
5. Wood and Randle are the best players on bad teams. This means increased defensive focus. Playing in a lineup with KAT, Ant, and Dlo means more open looks thus higher percentages. Also, having another big time scorer play with Dlo and Nowell in the second unit means more consistent scoring when KAT is on the bench.
6. Pretend we get Randle or Wood, they would spend time with the second unit and get shots from Beasley, Reid, and whoever else we trade away to get them. Also, even if Ant, and Dlo take 2 or 3 less shots per game, what does it matter if someone with as good or better shooting percentages get those shots wide open. More offensive weapons means more strain on the defense. Beasley on a good night proves my theory.
1) this team built around Towns. If he is down the whole team is down. Same with any top5 big in this league: Jokic, AD, Embiid
2) we are ok at def.rebounding with Vando and Towns both playing
3) Vando will be ideal backup PF and continue to play starter minutes until Simmons is fully back. Simmons has been for years an elite player, he has played in playoffs multiple times despite being poorly coached (and managed). Let's not go crazy, he is still a star. As for his demeanor, Butler did worse to MIN, but went to Rachel in order to save his image of tough guy. Simmons stays quiet, so right now his haters are loud
4) our defensive scheme will fail without PoA defender as well. It is good to have both PoA defender and defensive minded big, but I'd say that considering Beverley health and age finding PoA defender has higher priority
5) Wood and Randle have never been considered as defensive minded big. Wood also struggles to find success next to another big, I doubt he will fit seamesly next to Towns. Randle is known for settling for low effecient fadeaway mid range jumpers. Randle is not a role player, he will struggle to be efficient without many touches. Why DEN who play same "high wall" went away from twin towers scheme? They invested in Aaron Gordon lately, before that they played many years with Millsap, Grant, Green
6) Again, if your main focus add defensive presence, why you want to add Wood and Randle who are primary scorers? Why not add role players who are cheaper and more effective?
