Random Stat Alert: Celtics have the #1 defensive rating since Jaylen came back from hamstring injury. (#18 offense, #6 net).

Maybe that's the reason why Smart's shooting is so bad.

Inconsistent hand health could certainly interfere with reliable shooting.

He shot like total trash for years before the hand injury..so no...unless he magically learned to shoot then cut his hand that exact year.

Starting lineup (with Smart as PG) is now 2nd in net rating (1st in East) among 34 five-man lineups that have played at least 150 minutes. 1st in defensive rating and offensive rating climbing up since Tatum/Brown have been shooting the ball well. They're outscoring opponents by 24.1 pts/100 possessions.
Let's talk about the bench some other day lol.

Its wild because last year I think they actually had worse offensive talent but somehow still had the #10 offense. If they had the #10 offense this year they'd be talked about as a contender.
Also Smart-Brown-Tatum-Williams is clearly a strong core. The issue is all the minutes those guys aren't on together.

Celtics are 9-6 this month. Look at the schedule of bums they played. Start beating good teams. Rankings dont mean anything except the one that shows they are 1 game above.500

There's more at play than these numbers but two key difference imo from last season are 3FG% (11th to 23rd) and transition efficiency (2nd to 27th!).
What's even weirder is this:
Starters last season: 16th on offense, 10th on defense
Starters* this season: 9th on offense, 15th on defense
*Not our usual starting five but all starting fives we've used. Health may be a big factor here.

Regular starters great. Bench bad. Already mentioned this handful of times in this thread.

This one blew my mind...
Marcus Smart led the team in 3FG% in January. Caveats and all, Cs had 7 guys who shot at least 37% from 3 past month. Tatum and Horford didn't make the cut.
Smart led 289 qualified players (min 10 games played) in net rating (+22.6) in January.

Re: Official Celtics 2021-22 Season Thread, 2nd Edition
I think they starters should remain as is, with only a situational change. We should move Horford to back up 5 except against the team that start a "two big" lineup. and move G. Will in the the starting PF spot, or move Richardson into the SG spot and rotate Brown and Tatum over to SF and PF.
As far as the bench goes, during this upcoming trade deadline, we really should try to open up a roster spot to move Denzel Valentine to the big club for the remaining part of the year. He's just killing it in the G-League with 22pts, 11.3 rebs, and shooting 47 % from 3 on 11 attempts per game. Just a couple thoughts.

So according to this, Tatum has the 2nd worst spacing among the top 10 scorers. Tell us something we don't know. Add to Tatum's own struggles shooting the ball, no wonder Cs starters are ranked 26th in the league in 3FG%.

I like the Idea of Grant Starting, except when the Double-Centers are needed.
Not sure about moving Valentine up.
Though, I would play Hauser and B. Thomas as Two-Ways, as much as possible.
Richardson and Pritchard can share Backup PG duties, as a 2-Ballhandler 2nd Unit.
Proposed Rotation, 2nd Half of 2021-22:
Starters: Smart - Brown - Tatum - Grant - R. Williams
Rotation: Pritchard - Richardson - Langford/Nesmith - Horford
Reserves: XXXX - XXXX - XXXX - Fernando - Kanter
Two-Ways: Thomas - Hauser

Only weakspot there is backup PF or Center IMO.
Schroder ideally addresses that. The bench would be really solid with:
2 ball handlers (Pritchard and Richardson)
3 defenders (Richardson and Romeo and Horford)
2 shooters (Pritchard and Nesmith)
2.5 playmakers (horford and Richardson, a potential of Pritchard
And a much better than expected Horford as the stabilizing force at PF or C
