We shouldn't be looking into what teams have assets they can trade for Grant, we should be looking into what teams have dead cap money they can transfer to Detroit in a Grant trade.

Weaver prioritizes acquiring dead cap when he makes trades.

No

He prioritizes trading for players and creating dead cap.

That can be stretched.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Less than optimal.

No, we would WANT the New Orleans pick.

It's a lotto protected 1st that Portland owes Chicago starting in 2022 (super unlikely to convey this year obviously)... and will become a SRP if not conveyed as a 1st by 2028... so pretty much in 2028 if the Blazers are in the lottery, the Bulls get their SRP but if the Blazers are not in the lottery then the Bulls get the pick.

Portland can still deal their own 1sts, just with more elaborate conditions... I could see them sending it out as protected 1-4 and 15-30.

Right that answered my question. But they couldn’t trade both theirs and the Pelicans without acquiring another first because of the Stipen rule.

Kings/Pacers made big trade! Is Grant still in play for either team? Sabonis for Haliburton/Hield

I'm beginning to suspect Weaver is holding off on pulling the trigger on a great trade until this thread reaches 2000 posts. Such a jokester!

I just got a break at work, saw the trade, and went to the last page of this thread that didn't mention the trade at all. Figuring I had a scoop, posted away

Not all hope is lost

Hopefully it's Hart + Expirings (Satoransky) + Pelicans 1st (5-14th pick in 2022) for Grant

Hart is signed to a great deal and is 26, a pick even in the teens would be nice for our team

Or it could just be a cap absorbing move - Little + Pelicans pick for Grant which is even better for us clears up 18M and gets us 1st

James Edwards III was talking about how Weaver liked the other guards in the draft like Mathurin and Davis. Man I hope we just get that pick. One of Banchero, Smith, Chet and either Mathurin or Davis would be monster of a draft.

Blazers opened up a 20 mill trade exception , so yea they can pretty much just take Grant without matching salaries.
I would do NAW + the pelicans pick. If I’m being honest I would do the Pelicans pick and anything else. I don’t think we will get a better offer and I have no interest in signing Grant to 100mill extension

Blazers are currently 21-33 and in a close race just outside the playin. If we can get a 1st rounder back like say top 3 protected that could be MASSIVE for th rebuild. Lillard is still weeks away and who knows could get banged up again. Getting that 1st rounder alone with light protections this way alone would be a win.

Edit- Oh yeah pels pick would be nice as well. Yeah we need to land a 1st rounder this deadline.

Yeah but wouldn't that also be a good reason for them to also punt the rest of the season and let Dame get the rest he obviously needs due to having high mileage with all the post-season runs?

I don't see how they "need" Grant in this scenario either. I don't think we'll get a high offer as much as people think we will

Outside of Portland, the Kings are still a potential partner, the Sabonis+Holmes fit doesn't work at all.
Maybe we could get Holmes+top 4 protected pick + salary filler scrub

Kings have a good chance of making the play in, so they might be more willing to give up a late lotto pick now

Yeah I haven’t read anything but in theory the Kings could still be in play.

Forgot about NAW, he is a nice prospect too.

NAW/Little + Pelicans pick is about as best as we can do

Unless the Kings wanted to trade Bagley/Holmes/Top 4 Protected pick in 2022 for Grant and Joseph

Still would love to move on from Olynyk but that seems very unlikely to happen now

Underlined part x1000

If not extending him is the ultimate end game, it makes no sense not to trade Grant now.

All these deals came out of nowhere. Wouldn’t be surprised if a Grant deal with a non-rumored tram happened
