Abolutely hilarious on several levels. What a clown.

The oscars tv ratings are dying year after year.

Will has a new movie coming out.

Chris Rock’s first tour in 5 years starts in 3 days.

This “incident” happened just before the best actor award was announced.

Will just happened to be sitting first row, dead center of the stage.

Will links the incident to his performance in the film he wins the oscar for, citing fighting for your family.

Instantly goes viral and dominates the news cycle.

Chris could have but did not file charges.

Yeah, no way this could’ve been staged.

I was totally on "it's real" but you've convinced me!

Final piece: Any camera angle showing connection on punch?? The camera angles I've seen are prime "acting pull the punch" angles. I'm IN on this conspiracy.

Yeah, it's definitely a fair question and I think there's no doubt it if it were a non-celebrity that would have been handled differently. Maybe even if it happened earlier in the night - if I remember correctly it was very close to when the Best Actor award was going to be. Obviously that shouldn't have been a concern, but I have to imagine there were a lot of people scrambling around trying to get control of things. But seeing Lupita Nyong'o's reaction live, Chris Rock being visibly shaken, Denzel and Tyler Perry trying to calm him down in the commercial break and just the stunned silence in general, if it was just some sort of Kaufman-esque performance art, then Smith was the only person in on it.

I don't really care about the oscars much, but I just realized "Don't Look Up" was nominated for 4 oscars, including best picture.

That movie was a steaming pile of ****.

Anyone enjoying "Winning Time?" It's hilarious and entertaining.

I had no interest in it but I've heard mostly good things so I'll probably watch at some point.

I don't know what the hell is real or staged anymore but if that was real I have to tip my cap to Chris Rock for eating that slap and carrying on like a pro.

Not everything is a work, and you probably don't have the inside track on understanding things everyone else doesn't. Rock was shocked, his recovery joke didn't make sense, and he got tongue-tied multiple times trying to get back on track. If it was staged, it was an incredible execution of a truly terrible idea.

Moments like this prove to be strangely illuminating, at least for me - I'm reminded that ethical reasoning is really hard, most of existence is flailing in the void, and that social performance shackles our ability to handle complexity. As is increasingly the case, folks take cultural moments as an opportunity to climb onto their preferred soap box. Everything looks like a nail, etc.

I was at first surprised, then had a lightbulb moment seeing many of the same people who say "silence is violence" not be able to process how words could possibly cause more damage than getting smacked. To be clear, I'm not saying that's what happened here, and I'm not condoning what Smith did, but I also empathize with how bad that joke landed, and think we've gotten into a weird place where we both under and overrate physical violence depending on the context. It's hard to sort in the best of times, but the increasing ambiguity surrounding the word "violence" isn't helping any.

I think some saying it can’t possibly have been staged while some say it was 100% staged is an interesting reflection of our current times.

If it was staged, I don’t think more than 2-3 people were in on it (Smith, Rock, the producer). I also think it could have possibly been sort of talked through between Smith and Rock, but then sort of improv’d by Smith and thus Rock’s genuine surprise and stammering.

When these things are real, there is confusion and incongruity and oddness. Which this situation had. Both parties came out of it looking bad (Rock’s bad joke, Smith laughing then going Hulk mode).

It was so **** weird that I still can't believe it actually happened. I also can't imagine anyone even beginning to defend a grown ass man who walks up on stage and strikes a performer in any circumstance, let alone something as incredibly tame as a "GI Jane" joke. All the toxic "he was just defending his woman" people really outing themselves in this whole debacle. Like, how the hell was he not escorted out of the building? Also, who slaps a dude? I mean, honestly...

Slapping other dudes is all the rage now, apparently.

If anything is staged, it's the Smith's marriage.

Will loves the slap as he knows who he can step too and not get called on it.
