OT: TV and Movies

Doctor Strange was kind of fun because of Raimi’s influence but once again reinforces my issue with Marvel in general.

Endgame was the end of the story. All of these follow ups are superfluous and quite simply money grabs. There’s no sense of tension and there’s no feeling that these movies are building to anything. Doesn’t help that Strange is also on the very bottom tier of interesting Marvel characters.

Even the new Marvel shows have been kinda meh, especially compared to some of the Netflix Marvel shows of the past.

I'm excited for some of the darker characters they want to explore (Blade, Daredevil again, Moon Knight, Ghost Rider) but afraid they'll turn each property into another cookie cutter Marvel production.

I'm not up on MCU like many of you likely are, but I did think Wandavision was incredible. Now, that said, I'm an X-Men guy, and even though she's been cast as part of the Avengers in the current timeline, it still had that adjacency interest for me. Though the teases they did with Quicksilver were mean.

Along these lines, can someone spoil for me why we see Prof X's chair in the trailer for the new Dr Strange movie? Any hope I can grab onto, or just them being mean again?

I really enjoyed Doctor Strange and a lot of the new stuff. Them getting the rights from fox was pretty huge. Only issue I have is the whole marvel feel to everything that kind of holds movies back. It's hard to explain sometimes, but in Doctor Strange for example, there were a lot of horror elements but it never really had that sense of dread, b/c after all it is a marvel movie. Shang Chi, I thought was awesome, but then the super CGI ending and a few other things, while not ruining the movie, took away from what was a really good, street level, story.

I have a feeling X-men will be a major part of Marvel films moving forward. Wouldn't be surprised if they had their own universe under Kevin Fiege that resembles more of the 90's cartoon we loved as kids and they can mingle with the other Avengers.

it sounds like they are variants? I haven't seen the movie yet, but from what I've read, it sounds mostly like fan service (Fans have been fancasting Krasinski as Reed Richards for decades now). So it was a way to get them into the universe, but they don't necessarily have to use that version of Reed Richards if they ever want to do a Fantastic Four movie since it's a "multiverse"? My guess is if they do some sort of Secret Wars storyline, they'll have versions of characters from all over the place/timeline. Think Spiderman No Way Home, but x100.

The problem is the impermanence. There are no stakes when you can turn back time or just pop over to a new universe.

I liked the Dr Strange movie more than I expected. I loved Shang Chi. Eternals was pretty forgettable and Black Widow was years late and out of place.

At the end of the day, they want to do big things in the stories then be able to wipe the slate clean. There doesn't seem to be an acknowledgment that having and regularly using a big eraser like that impacts the stakes so heavily.

Just ordered two tickets for my brother and I to see the earliest possible showing of the new Top Gun. Two weeks is entirely too many weeks to wait to see this movie.

Yeah, the CGI looks terrible in the previews. There is an epidemic of terrible CGI in even top tier media these days (looking at you, Disney), and I think a lot of if it has to do with how things move in space. The renders are often great on their own, but they're deployed haphazardly, with no regard to how things actually move, or what mass actually is, so things (especially bodies) look cartoony and weightless.

YouTube doesn't do the colors/contrast justice, but Gareth Edwards is on the short list when it comes to CGI motion and weight.

And if you're feeling fiesty, a lot of modern CGI/animation owes a ton to this scene from End of Evangelion. GOAT portrayal of weight and scale. It's basically the reason Pacific Rim exists.

Not even saying the Batman was a masterpiece (it wasn’t), but it was so well shot, so gritty and unafraid to get really dark that going back to the almost cartoon-y vibe of MCU movies is tough. Not to say they aren’t a fun time but the difference is glaring.

Said it several times already but we need more Daredevil type content in the MCU where they just don’t hold back in terms of violence, themes and tone. Haven’t seen Moon Knight, maybe that’s close? Idk.

Moon Knight is definitely not Daredevil unfortunately. The new Strange movie was more violent.

It was supposed to be even darker or more horror themed then the studio stepped in a bit, iirc. I think it's the color grading or something, b/c I had the same thought. Maybe it was b/c, at the end of the day, a marvel movie, but I never really felt that dread or weariness that something like a recent james wan or ari aster film would do. Raimi did his best given what he could though and I enjoyed it.
