You might think that Heinsohn's circus shots are just highlight reel shots.
That is not the case.

A large percentage of Heinsohn's shots were unguardable circus shots. I have seen enough Celtics game film to verify that.

Now Heinsohn only shot FG 40.5% for his career but until the last few years 40.5% was a higher percentage than the Celtic team shot.
40.5% was about league average or a bit better than league average most years.
So what we have is Heinsohn being like the running hook version of Iverson on a team that was even more dominant defensively than Iverson's defensively dominant finals version 76ers.

Even in the last few years when 40% was no longer better than league average it still is better than league average for half court offense. The fast break was crucial because teams could shoot 50% on the fast break but in the half court teams were strugling to score. Sam Jone's baseline bank shots were also not easy shots.

You could not stop Iverson from getting his shots but the shots were too dificult to outscore the Lakers. You could not stop Heinsohn from getting his crazy shots but the Celtics defense was good enough to win with an offense that was only shooting FG 40%

Hitting running high arc hook shots at 40% was amazing. You see a lot of players shooting those shots in George Mikan's day but they were only hitting about 30% of those shots.

Here is the fabled Paultz/Kelley vs. Olajuwon/Sampson matchup from 1985:

"Coach, why don't you just relax? We're not good enough to beat the Lakers. We've had a great year, why don't you just relax and cool down?"

I finally got long, good quality version of this legendary game. Dominant performance by Russell on both ends of the floor, overcoming Baylor's valiant effort:

Maybe I shouldn't be, but I'm surprised by how "modern" Russell's game looks. Dribble hand-offs, creating inside out out of the post. He'd look right at home on Warriors for example

I think some people underestimate how versatile some oldschool players were offensively, even back in the 1960s. As an example, you can see Jerry Lucas running P&Rs here as a ballhandler and shooting jumpshots behind the screen (as well as taking ridiculous 16 feet hook shots :D ).

It's just a brief clip, but I posted it to make people realize that lesser known stars from that era were plenty skilled.

Very rare duel between the best PGs of the earliest era of the NBA.

More highlights from that game coming soon! :)

I know that Moses isn't very popular here, but I hope people will appreciate the highlights from his peak season. It includes a lot of rare footage that hasn't been available until very recently.

I'm hearing that alot of classic NBA/ABA footage from youtube was randomly removed today across multiple channels(ik Torontos was one that seemingly disappeared) - is there any reason it happened just now all of a sudden?

PLEASE stop doing that.

I don't know the reason, it seems that they do such purge from time to time. It's horrible, they allow you to run a channel for years and then suddenly delete your all content...
