Tatum has turned into a very well-rounded player. I posted I think he'll choke under pressure in the finals and he kinda did with 3/17 shooting in Gm1, but even if he has a bad shooting game he's compensating now with playmaking. 1A to Booker's 1B if McD was as smart as he thought he is.

I loath Ryan McDonough with the passion of 100 suns but I can't pin the Tatum one one him. From everything I've heard there was zero chance Tatum was getting past Boston that draft.

Probably, but he was so proud of himself for outsmarting the world with Josh skipping the workout with Boston. Really bad talent evaluation if we count drafting Bender and Chriss as well.

Tatum in an interview said he and his agent was very confident that he was going to be a Suns. In fact, Tatum was very pump to be selected by the Suns. What changed everything (and conceivably the course of the Suns and Celtics trajectory) was the second interview. His first interview with the Celtics was meh, but he blew them out of the water with the second showing.

Tatum did not want to go the second interview, and it was only due to Coach K's advice that he did. Absolute pure luck on the Celtics part.

The other factor was Ryan's "pulling a fast one" on the C's. Ainge and the Celtics flew all the way to visit Josh, but Josh rejected them at the last minute and wouldn't allow the visit. Probably at Ryan's insistence. I think Ainge pivoted towards Tatum after that shenanigan by Josh/Ryan.

Yeah I don't think big collar burner boy Bryan Colangelo was a big loss.

Jerry did some good things with AZ sports but frankly wasn't wealthy enough to own an NBA team. It's just too bad he sold to that jackass Sarver who is also not wealthy enough to own a team in 2022.

I don't disagree that Ainge isn't exactly the most credible source.

There's just so many other verifiable 'what ifs' like Luka that I can't get too down about one that only maybe sort of could have happened.

I personally would have taken Isaac over either it them, I'm always smitten with those long versitle prospects. Was never as in love with Jackson as most people where and I was completely out on him after seeing him play like 10 games.

In hindsight Fox is actually the guy they 'should' have drafted that season because that was the summer that they chose to not give bledsoe the extension. Immediately after making that decision they should have traded Eric and took Fox as a replacement.

The real sliding doors moment of the McD era was the knight trade. Had that not happened so many things play out differently.

I know Tatum wanted to be a Sun. I saw that interview. Boston was never going to draft Jackson though. He did screw them on the workout so obviously they wouldn't have been planning on drafting him before even working out. Of course Jackson could have gone and wowed them but that we will never know. The very fact that Coach K urged him to go in again for a 2nd workout seems like pretty clear evidence the Celtics really liked him. All I had heard after that was that they would have taken him #1 but it was obviously who Philly wanted and who the Lakers wanted.

McD of course said he thought Josh Jackson was the best player in the draft afterwards. Of course he is not going to say he thought he was the 3rd best player but he didn't have to say anything at all.

After CP3 retires, DA is traded for someone of Horford's level, hardest for the Suns to match this Celtics roster would be finding a 2nd option like Brown. Mikal equals Smart. He doesn't have Brown's ball-handling and mentality to turn into that 2nd option. Don't think Book is a 1st option either. A lot of people on GB question Tatum is one either, but I guess it depends on the structure of the team. On a well balanced team with 1b player they can do well in a 1a role.

You know most people overreact after losses. Heck, Ayton can have a big game shooting 70% and you will post about passing up on a dunk.

Celtics fans are among the most critical boisterous fans though...Boston fans in general. They love Tatum. All their starters really. There are really not that many fans here wanting to trade Booker. Maybe 1 or 2 brought it up as a serious thing.

But he ended the season with two really bad games as our 1st team All NBA guy instead of helping lead us over the not great Mavs. I think he's probably avoided criticism pretty well for the most part. More has gone Paul and Ayton's way. Of course Paul didn't play well the last 5 and Ayton had that last game sit down, yet we were down by 35 so it really was irrelevant.

I still expect Boston to win the series. They have rose to the occasion and won when needed, even on the road.

Curry is crazy good though. Not sure why White was on him on the end and not Smart though.

It did seem like Tatum passed up a shot at a crucial time near the end for a Smart 3 which didn't go in..can't remember details though.

No team has won two in a row and if that continues Boston will win on 7 though of course the would mean 2 on the road. I think they may bounce back in win game 5 in GS and then close out at home in 6.

No one hates their team, players, and coaches as much as the most die hard fans of that team. It's a funny phenomenon that's so true when you browse these boards.

Tatum has had an interesting post season. He set a record for most turn overs for a postseason and is in a horrible slump from 2, but has played great D and shot the 3 well. He's obviously really good but not without a few warts (that's the case with lots of great players).

This was at the time 3&D team favorites like Majerle were traded for mediocre Cs like Hot Rod Williams. The game was different. Now it's all about chucking 3s. Ironically, Suns still made the finals with a true C and will most likely become a mediocre team composed of 3pt shooters. Where there is smoke, there is fire. Not sure if this offseason, but he'll be gone at some point. Honestly, I don't care that much at this point. Most Suns fans want him gone. I hope it works for both sides, would love to see him coached by Pop or any other coach who wants to develop a 23yo Nr1 pick. Suns can get a PG to replace Paul. This organization has always been about playing small anyway, though never winning this way.

Jalen Rose and Bill Simmons used to talk about that all the time. "Every player's goal is to get that 2nd contract" like it's talked about all the time. Even when he said it I thought "that's probably what they all talk about...gotta get to that 2nd contract."

He has certainly said some stupid things but I don't think any of this stuff is that big of a deal. Last year he talked about how his goal is to win a championship..how he and Book talked about how they want to make sure they have that goal and work hard to get back, etc, and you could see how they both expanded their games this year.

It's funny people keep referring to a 4 year old quote when he was like 19, and it is a worthy goal for all rookies to make sure they work hard enough and improve enough to get that 2nd contract. They can't immediately think they are good enough to win a championship....while that's a nice goal, if you don't know the work you need to progress enough to stick, you end up like Chriss or Jackson.

I think the rumors are real. There are too many sources (Woj, Jake Fischer, Stein, Bill Simmons), and these rumors have been circulating since last season's tradeline. I don't think Ayton's agent is spreading it, that doesn't seem to be their MO nor Ayton for that matter. Ayton seems to have grown very professionally since his rookie year.

Half of the rumors aren't even pro-Ayton, I would say half of the rumor indicates the Suns don't want Ayton long term. I can't imagine a smart agent would put that kind of info.

I think the Suns' organization do want Ayton. Jones and Sarver have come out in his support. But Monty doesn't. And that's pretty much the end of that. I think the Suns are going to come out of a potential deal as a real loser. I think Monty, more or less, is forcing an Ayton trade and teams know that and will take advantage. I really, really hope I am wrong but that seems to be the general feeling.

and then there's the infamous quote about DA's goal in the NBA to get his second contract.

Doesn't mean anything rather than a 19 year old getting excited about being super rich.

It's funny people keep referring to a 4 year old quote when he was like 19, and it is a worthy goal for all rookies to make sure they work hard enough and improve enough to get that 2nd contract. They can't immediately think they are good enough to win a championship....while that's a nice goal, if you don't know the work you need to progress enough to stick, you end up like Chriss or Jackson.

Or Archie, who was ready to become a star after his first summer league. His quote hasn't bothered me at all. The video in the link does though. Can't live without video games ? I played video games at his age as well, but basketball was much more entertaining for me and I didn't do it with 100M+ on the horizon.
