Still have him ranked as the #20 prospect on my big board. To get him at 53 would be a steal.

Here's his season highlights:

Wow, Interesting.

WHo do you have as an NBA comparison?

Yes, very interesting. Yoan is legit. So underrated. There's always 1 or 2 international guys who go way later than they should.

And NBA comp for Yoan, that's tricky. I'm not even really sure. He is pretty unique. I guess kind of like Blake Griffin before the injuries, while at the same time being able to shoot the ball like we saw from Griffin later in his career.

Looks a little bit, in that short video, like Siakam.

Is he a stash in your mind? Or bring over right away?

Good question. IMO it could go either way.

Being an international player in a top european league, he does offer that flexibility to stash him - which of course opens up another roster spot we can use on someone else, like a good veteran player. Plus, he is kind of raw skill-wise and still developing his basketball IQ on both ends of the floor. so he can stay overseas for another year, work on that stuff and then join the team for 2023-2024.

On the other hand, the case for having him on our 2022-2023 roster is this:

-Al is probably only gonna be here for 1 more year. Yoan would be a good guy to be mentored by Al, to learn from Al. Yoan could be on a 2-way contract, get most of his playing time in the g-league but we'd get him some reps here and there on the big club to help with his development and also him being on the big club (he can be on the big club roster for up to 50 games on a 2-way) can get him more time to be mentored by Al, more time around the other vets on the team to see how they do it.
-Bottom line, the guy has talent. He's got NBA level athleticism, he's got an NBA body. He can rebound, block shots, hit 3's and run the floor. We need more guys on this roster with legit talent. He may be ready now to help us win some games, albeit in a smaller role - that could increase as the season goes on

Long story short, he could be stashed or he could be on the roster from day 1. It could be either. 1 step at a time, we would first see how he looks in summer league - if he looks good, then we see how he looks in training camp. By then, see how the rest of the roster shakes out and it'll probably be clear which option is best.
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)

I do wonder/lean towards Al sticking around on another deal past next year, so that could help even if we do stash. I'd probably lean stash if he's not expected to contribute, but like you say see how he looks (if we end up drafting him).

I could be on board for him at 53, then a Gabe Brown, Vince Williams, etc type UDFA. As above, I'm a little worried we don't have much or a role to offer the UDFA guys, but that's kinda the deal I guess.

You have the 53rd pick. There are only 4 picks after your pick.

Do you draft a guy who you want to sign, or do you draft a guy you might want to sign down the road? To me, you stash the player at 53, and the guy you want to sign you sign him as an UDFA.

That way you get two players, not one.

It's dumb to take a guy you can sign 30 minutes after the draft at 53. 53 should be reserved for either a euro, a player who drops on your board, or a player you aren't confident you can sign but you really really want him.

I agree. If you are stashing, they have to be overseas players willing to be stashed and they have to be someone really young for their class. With that said, the Sixers drafted Paul Reed - who I really wanted the Celtics to get - with the 58th overall pick a year ago and he was getting minutes in the playoffs this season and doing really well too. If you see someone you really like available, I say you go for them even if the chances of them being available as an undrafted player is high.

ok, it's probably nothing. But.....

First, there's rumors about the Celtics trying to move up in the draft and showing interest in Tari Eason

Second, here are the prospects arriving to the draft. Look at Eason getting off the bus at the :18 mark.....wearing Celtics green!

I think the top 5 are set. Would be surprised if anyone but these 5 players don't go 1-5.

1. Jabari Smith Jr
2. Chet Holmgren
3. Paolo Banchero
4. Keegan Murray
5. Jaden Ivey

Return to Boston Celtics
