And NBA comp for Yoan, that's tricky. I'm not even really sure. He is pretty unique. I guess kind of like Blake Griffin before the injuries, while at the same time being able to shoot the ball like we saw from Griffin later in his career.
Is he a stash in your mind? Or bring over right away?
Good question. IMO it could go either way.
Being an international player in a top european league, he does offer that flexibility to stash him - which of course opens up another roster spot we can use on someone else, like a good veteran player. Plus, he is kind of raw skill-wise and still developing his basketball IQ on both ends of the floor. so he can stay overseas for another year, work on that stuff and then join the team for 2023-2024.
On the other hand, the case for having him on our 2022-2023 roster is this:
-Al is probably only gonna be here for 1 more year. Yoan would be a good guy to be mentored by Al, to learn from Al. Yoan could be on a 2-way contract, get most of his playing time in the g-league but we'd get him some reps here and there on the big club to help with his development and also him being on the big club (he can be on the big club roster for up to 50 games on a 2-way) can get him more time to be mentored by Al, more time around the other vets on the team to see how they do it.
-Bottom line, the guy has talent. He's got NBA level athleticism, he's got an NBA body. He can rebound, block shots, hit 3's and run the floor. We need more guys on this roster with legit talent. He may be ready now to help us win some games, albeit in a smaller role - that could increase as the season goes on
Long story short, he could be stashed or he could be on the roster from day 1. It could be either. 1 step at a time, we would first see how he looks in summer league - if he looks good, then we see how he looks in training camp. By then, see how the rest of the roster shakes out and it'll probably be clear which option is best.
